Yes, interesting indeed. Sound travels faster in steel than through the air because sound is a compressional wave and moves better through more densely packed matter. Sound moves slower and slower the less matter is present (ie higher up in the atmosphere with lower pressure sound travels slower) and wont travel at all in the absence of matter which is why you cant hear anything in space (a vacuum.)
