Advice? Opinion? Suggestion?

Post by edc on Sat Feb 04, 2012 8:31 pm

What should I do?

I posted several days ago about a shipping situation, but now I'm stuck.

I placed an order for 2000 bullets from a company, but did not pay the insurance fee. Package gets damaged in transit and only 585 bullets actually arrive. I do some research and USPS insurance does not cover "poor packaging." The company sent a heavy ammo can filled with bullets. Approximate weight ~55lbs. Packaging material? A few pieces of newspaper that can be seen in the photo attached below.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't see a few pieces of newspaper supporting that much weight.

Company has offered to send another 500 bullets, but won't do more than that stating that I didn't buy insurance and that "no amount of packaging would have stopped that from happening." I disagree with that statement. Styrofoam would have kept the empty space in the box rigid.

You can see in the picture the corner that at one point was completely busted through. USPS "repackaged it".

So. Should I accept the additional 500 bullets and still be out $90 or file a Paypal claim, return what little was received and most likely win?

So would I, those GI ammo cans are hard to hurt filled even partly with bullets,
to damage one that way is sheer negligence on the USPS' part but I wouldn't be
shocked one iota to learn that if they suspected what was in the can, that damage
was DELIBERATE either from some hoplophobe liberal creep in the PO or someone
wanted to look and see what they could steal. Heck it can't be from minor "handling"
issues since the PO morons are so used to one ounce letters, the ammo can had a
handle on the top to lift and move it with.

Nevermind, filing a claim won't do any good.

Firearms, ammunition, AND bullets are prohibited from sale using Paypal.

If I file a claim, they want to know what I bought.. hah Re-imbursement is not granted for stuff that is prohibited.

NAME OF COMPANY -- so I will be sure not to order from them. I would sure let the company know that I was not pleased with their service and intend to spread it all over every gun board ....

Let me throw out another thought.
The company sent out the ammo in good faith. The buyer chose not to buy the insurance. Package is delivered badly damaged by USPS. Company is contacted and they offer to send 500 more bullets at no additional cost, even though they did not have control of the shipment once the USPS took possession or any real obligation to make good.
Sounds to me like the real issue is with the USPS, not the company. Also, choosing to not buy the insurance and then expecting the company to make good on a claim, in my opinion is being a bit harsh.
I always add insurance to my orders of ammo, powder, primers or brass. In short, anything involving firearms.
Just my $.02.

Some places like Powder Valley insure all their packages for that reason...and you pay for it....its not an option for the customer

I can see why they do it

Packaging issue or not...how the heck did USPS destroy an ammo can...those suckers are stout. I would think that would be packaging enough. Beef should be with USPS.

Take the bullets and chalk it up to "stuff happens". Life's too short to stress over relatively small stuff.

It's a tough situation. I purchase insurance on bulk bullets just because of the weight/packaging issues. I had a package get lost somewhere between Idaho and Memphis last year. I had purchased several boxes of bullets previously without insurance and they arrived just fine. The seller wouldn't replace my order because the USPS is who lost it and I didn't buy insurance (even though the seller told me I should every time I ordered). The seller threw in 200 "free" bullets on my next order. The claim with USPS is still open after +6 months. Since then, I buy insurance every time ($3) and still buy bullets from the same guy (RMR).

The last can of ammo that I got in the mail was packaged in a box with no packing material and it arrived unhurt. The box was the exact size of the the can so there wasn't space for any foam/newspaper. The box had a tear and the can had a scratch, but it was all there. Your package was probably damaged in transit so the company isn't obligated to do anything and fighting the USPS is going to be a nightmare.

As far as stuff getting damaged, I'm inside of FedEx hubs all over the country and you'd be amazed at the amount of package damage that occurs (and how it occurs). Percentage-wise, it isn't much. I saw one of my own company's packages fall off a cart and get run over by a tug.
