A better .35 for the handi rifle bunch?
The .350 remington magnum came to mind today and I surfed around looking up info as I've not heard from this obsolescent cartridge in quite a while. It has the ballistics of a .35 whelen in a shorter fatter case based on the 375 H&H.
The belted case has nothing to do with being a magnum or strength. When the 375 H&H was developed they wanted smooth reliable feeding from a magazine so a conventional rim like in a 30-30 was out. The straight walled case had nothing to headspace on so a rimless design was out. The belt was the solution.
The 375 case is the parent of a slew of other magnums, all the weatherbys, 300 win mag, 7mm rem mag, etc. When necked down the rim loses its purpose because the case can headspace on the the shoulder, but it's still there.
There is nothing wrong with the Whelen per se, but the tiny shoulder in a break open rifle has led to a lot of reliability problems.
Why not use the .350 rem mag instead and let the belt control the headspace?

Several folks are rechambering the 35 remington to the 356 winchester. That one has ballistics similar to the 358 win but with a semi rimmed case. Imo that would be an ideal 35 caliber prim weapon. I just love my 35 remington so much that i cant bring myself to rechamber.
to me, IT is the ideal 35 cal cartridge

My 35 rem hits hard. I can imagine what a 358 would do!!

I've got both. I've 35 Remington in a G2 and a 358 Winchester in an Encore. Of the two the 35 Rem is mild shooting and plenty accurate. The 358 is a beast! It is fine with 180 Speers but anything 200 grains or heavier could definitely use a brake to control the recoil. I still wish we could get Remington to offer its 150 PSP bullet as a component. To my understanding it was originally designed for the 350 Magnum. So it is constructed well. I have about 30 rounds loaded with it in 35 Remington @ 2350 fps. Penetration and performance is great! It easily doubles its diameter on exit. Haven't recovered one yet because they always completely penetrate.

I had a 350 rem mag model 600 that I sold recently. It's a great cartridge, IMHO. Accurate and powerful.

I love my 35Rem but its in a Model 94 lever gun and can't use it for primitive weapon. I got a handirifle in 35 whelen and haven't sighted it in or even shot it yet.

It's the Handi rifle in general I got issues with...Not the caliber
35 Whe is poor man's 375 H&H...Its pretty handi being able to fire form your own brass from readily available '06 cases
Got two 35's....everything I have ever shot with it has been bull dozed....DRT
It don't need fixin
