Night vision

Post by crazyace85 on Tue 7 Feb 2012 - 17:27

Is there an inexpensive night vision optic out there that can be weapon mounted to use with a red dot or day scope on an AR15. I'm probably just wishful thinking but under $500. Need something that is good for 100yards.

I don't know of any. Check with Josh at TGC in Abbeville. He uses NV stuff for hogs and knows what works.

Look at Sportsman's Guide. A co-worker was looking at them the other night. There were some in the $3-400 range.

Will do. There was a guy selling sightmark night vision scopes and such at the Oxford gun show. They looked pretty good and he said the cheaper one was good for 100 yards easy

Is that the raider. Id like to take a look through one to see how well it performs before spending the cash on it for sure.

I too have been looking for a night optix to mount in front of my day scope. The only one I can find redily available is the PS22, but it starts about $1800. I have even considered selling my Chinese double underfolder AK to fund the project. It seems the only other option is to mount one of the other(cheaper) NV scopes to another rifle and have a dedicated night/hog gun.

That's probably what I'll end up doing. It's just not worth a couple grand for me because I'm not gonna use it that much I just want one.

Not sure if you have considered the Laser Genetics route, but they seem to work pretty well. Not as 'covert' as true night vision but for hunting hogs and/or yotes, work good.

Kinda late on the reply, but I have a few pix on my laptop with me.

First is the ATN 390 Paladin (Cabelas on sale $499) They are big and heavy but are pretty damn clear with the supplied IR illuminator. The illuminator is detachable and uses a seperate battery than the main unit, so it'll last pretty well. These are in my kitchen looking into the living room (with zero available light):

ATN Full IR:

Now for the Luna, there is only two IR illuminator settings low & high (or 1&2). IR illuminator is part of the scope and not detachable for remote mounting like the ATN. BUT, it's a lighter more compact scope, I think a touch clearer view than the ATN and a single battery will run the scope and highest IR for 4 hours with no problem. The luna unit runs about $750, it's as high end as 1st gen NV gets. Oh yeah, the luna has a daylight filter that kicks butt, so in a pinch you can use it as a day scope.

Luna IR2:

Luna also makes a Laser IR illuminator with a focusable beam (kinda like a mag light does) that'll get you out to 500m, but it's another $300. It'll make any NV gen sing, it's unreal....I don't have any pix of it yet, but I will.

This is the best I could pull off inside the house at a 25 distance to the far wall. I hope this helps some.

Thanks for the pics. Only bad thing is now it looks like I'm spending way more than I thought. That Luna looks good.

Actually, the ATN focuses much better outside, so the quality of the pix shown are a bit misleading. For $500, it's a reasonable cash outlay. It does suck to buy something unseen and have it turn to poop on you, so I thought I'd share what I had.

Here's what the ATN looks like on the good lady's bushy carbon15:

Here's the luna on my suppressed 7.62x39 hog thumper:
