Been there and done that as a kid. Think it was a bobcat but it sure sounded human. Bunch of us were in the woods in Carolina over Christmas break and this happened about 9pm. Only time in my life that I know the hair on the back of my neck was standing up straight and we all hauled butt. Went back the next day and found tracks that looked like a bobcat.

No howling last night. I guess the garlic scared it off.

I have heard some owls make some loud freaky howling noises while turkey hunting, could be a possibility.
