Post by samiam on Wed Feb 08, 2012 11:23 am

If you just order a M1 from CMP what are the chances that you will get a bad rifle or is it a crap shoop.

Order a Service Grade or better and you will not be disappointed.

+1 on the Service Grade. Try and get an H&R too.

I lucked out with a Service Grade, ordered in December 2005 delivered in February 2006. Received an unfired Korean-War era rifle. Doug Bowser inspected & gauged it for me and verified it was unfired. Wood was only VG+, I mean this isn't a "perfect" rifle externally, but for Service Grade it was wonderful. I was very fortunate. If you do get one you don't like you will never lose your money on it if you sell, they are worth much more on the market than what CMP sells them for. Best bet is to go to Anniston. See Doug Bowser's post on "how to pick out a CMP Garand":

Take Doug with you & feed him some good BBQ and he'll find you the best one on the rack on that day, right Poppa Doug? Smile

We need to field trip over there one day. Take Mr. Doug, let him find us a good one, get some ammo, hit Dreamland in Tuscaloosa on the way back.

I have owned a couple of VERY Good DCM Garand's...In fact I bought one from a friend last month. He has owned it since early'70's and I have been working on Him for 5 years to sell it to Me... I finally got it and it's one of the Cleanest H&R's I have ever seen and Now I am trying to Buy back My original Springfield that I shot for in the '80's...I have a Friend that got His Winchester at the same time I shot for mine and I'm working trying to buy His too!!!...
