whew.. loaded 140 .357's

Post by pinetor on Fri Feb 10, 2012 8:38 am

Loading .357's on my Dillion is slow work (well its slow.. not so much work) Anyway I used up all my Nosler 158gr JHP with 6.5gr of HP-38 each. Also finished off my first carton of CCI primers that I bought in the group buy here.

Still pondering the loads for the 170gr we cast.

My last loading of 357's with HP-38 was 4.5 grs behind a 158 gr. swc. After shooting 500 rounds in 3 hours, my hand was hurting.
I'm shooting paper at up to 50 feet. May reduce it 3.5 grs., why waste powder on paper.

Have you actually weighed the 170 gr cast? Here is the best I can do -- it is for a 168gr cast ... I would recommend using the starting load .. the pressures seem to rise a lot between the start load and the max load ... If you want full-house loads, stick to jacketed bullets ... IMHO

I know, use to 50 rounds for 15 minutes. That puts a nice hole in the paper.

Thanks Captain.. Like the looks of the H110 and the IMR 4227. I have yet to load a max round. SO yeah, 13 gr of H110 looking good.
I wont use many of these on paper hopefully, I want to try shooting with wheelgun in IMHSA stuff

Hey Pinetor, what Dillon do you have? I have a SDB and load 300 an hour. I timed myself the other evening and loaded 45 .40S&W in 5 minutes, good ammo, checked the powder the whole shebang. And why is shooting holes in paper wasting powder? If you don't practice and can't put the bullet where you want it they really won't do you a whole lot of good!!

Methinks they meant shooting a full power load at paper is a waste of powder. I didn't catch that at first either!
