Saw that in the Brookhaven newspaper's website yesterday, didn't understand why his office needed the registeration info, I keep mine to myself. Was hoping some Lincoln Co. people would chime in.

I can understand why they would like for you to register your guns, but then again I dont want that info to be common knowledge when the SS comes knocking at my door

They have been offering this for a long time. I know a lot of people that take all their guns and register them. I have never taken any of mine, but I have lots of friends that have. They say it is for safe keeping of the numbers and such. Steven is a very honest and down to earth person also. He is a straight shooter on everything.

Side note: That is one of my real good friends that wrote the article. I talk to her about everyday. She is also a real big gun person and loves to shoot. I just talked to her tuesday about going out shooting when I get in from work.

They offered this before Steve got into office IIRC. I guess if we elect someone that doesn't have the poeple of the county in their best interest then it could be bad. I just don't see us electing someone like that, but it could happen I guess.

I think pictures of sn's would suffice for stolen property retrieval.

Even if the sherriff is cool now, the registry will be available to the next one, as well as available to be shared with the feds should they so ask. Not worth it IMHO.

Sorry - don't trust the Feds ... they can get it if they want it. Once you give it to a gov agency, you have lost all control. Better off, IMHO, not having them listed with the SO ... if you are truely concerned, take pictures of your guns, put them on a CD, and place them in a safe place - more than one copy in several places would be better.

Only #s I'm willing to share with the govt. are the ones that are ALREADY stolen. Serial #s of current inventory are only on paper. Not on computer. Have about 15 stolen, some for more than 30 years, haven't gotten lucky on any of them yet.

On a related note, (not wanted to hijack this thread), how do ya'll document your guns for insurance purposes? I already have lists of serial#'s, receipts, and photos....but my insurance agent is telling me that to get a separate rider for firearms, I'll need to take the guns to a dealer to get a "value" on them... most of mine are fairly new and seems to me that my original receipts would be close enough. The guy at Leaf River Sports kindly said he'd give me a replacement value for them if I brought them up there....just wondering the "proper' procedure, if there is such a thing....of course this is State Farm I'm dealing with... IDK

i have a pretty large collection on a seperate policy with state farm. I give them make model s/n and what i want it insured for. they have never asked me to have it appraised. If they insist i would probably go on gunbroker and print out some comparables of what they are selling for on there. or go to the gun company website and print them on the msrp listing for the guns. On a side note, i have had one rifle stolen while i had my guns insured w/ State Farm and they were very prompt on paying me, i was very surprised at the ease of it.
