Anyone using Alliant's E3 powder??

Post by MrClean on Mon May 28, 2012 10:17 am

Probably should have posted and checked before ordering 5 pounds. I know... odd amount. 4 lbs for me and a pound for a couple friends to split to try out. (DBC & JH)

From what I've read elsewhere it seems like it if bringing a good following of shooters.
Meters good, low smoke, compared to VV by many folks it seems, but half the cost.... etc etc

Just curious if anyone here is actually using it and can chime in. I always like hearing directly from folks I know other than off other forums where I'm not too sure.

Will be loading 40 S&W major loads, 4.1 grains, 185 gr Precision Black Bullet, small rifle primers. Probably working up other caliber loads but this will be the first.

Here are a couple of posts off Enos if anyone else was wanting some info. Just looking for 'local' folks maybe using it.

Update this thread with what you find when you test it. I'd like to find a replacement for N320.

Update: Still waiting on my Black Bullets - 185gr. However, powder came in and I had some 180 FMJ bullets, so.... loaded up about 150 rounds after testing some.

180gr FMJ, 4.1gr E3 powder, Small Rifle Primers, 1.18 OAL.
Seems to be VERY CLEAN and no smoke. Meters very good as well. Throwing out highest and lowest from 8 rounds, it only ranged 15fps!! I have never had that happen before.

Power Factor out of my 5" bbl averages to between 169 and 170. Once I get my 185gr black bullets in, I will adjust accordingly and run it around 172 probably. I don't like cutting it close.

Have only shot a group at about 10 yards, but it is seemingly tighter than the factory and even tighter than my production load for 9mm xDm.

So far I am VERY happy!! Will be testing/shooting more!

Sounds like you had some great results.

Is E3 to fast for 9mm? I see they only published 12ga load data...

I believe it should work just fine. They have been comparing to 320 which is great for 9mm. Here is a link with some 9mm data on E3: http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=52071

Thanks.

No one offered any 115gr data. Bummer.
I ordered some 115gr. Xtreme bullets ( I usually shoot 125 molys) because I love the way the factory federal 115gr. 9mms shoot, and I was going to try to re create it.

Sounds very promising. I'm looking forward to trying it out. So let's see, you got a pound for me and I'm going to tell John about it and whether or not he should switch to it, right? Ha. Kidding, 1/2 lb should be great. If it is able to make major easily at 4.2 grains with a 180 FMJ, that is about a full grain less than I am using of N320 which, at least in theory, is good. I have shot 320 for 10 plus years though, so I am not giving up easily.

Ok.... next report
185gr Black Bullets came in yesterday. So I loaded a few rounds up.... ok, maybe more than a 'few'.

Using the same load as above, although I did change OAL to slightly over 1.70 (usually mics at 1.72-1.73). The previously set OAL was sticking just slightly when I manually fed them through. My avg speed was 997fps and PF about 184. I thought that a bit high. And they were smoking. You guessed it, crimp was pulling some of the coating off. Backed off crimp enough to pretty much just take care of the 'bell' from powder station and Bazinga! No smoke, PF dropped to 180.

So I then backed powder charge off to 4.0gr. Speed dropped to avg of 925, PF of 171. Haven't shot them at 25yards yet, but at 12 yards... shooting through a chrono.... all rounds from all recipes fell into a small little 2-3" group. (need to adjust my sights, all little high and right) Smile

So going to shoot some at a little distance this weekend. Last weekend, that far shot at the steel plate took a while to get there! Almost pulled the trigger again a couple times before I heard "ding". I think 171 will give me enough of a safety margin to ensure I make chrono each time. Will bump back up to 4.1 if bullet is slow to go 'ding' this weekend and see how that goes. Maybe that was just a fluke.

Looks like E3 is my new powder!!! thumbs up
