This boat is getting crowded because I'm in it to, but I'm up for the learning experience. I'll chip in to help on the cost of the steaks or bring anything else that's needed lol.

I have a little experience with AKs. The only tools I have is a jig for pressing in/out barrels. I had to remove an ak barrel once before. I've fixed some canted sights and what not also. The hardest part is riveting from what I gather and I don't have any of those tools. I'd be interested in learning flat bending and riveting if this thing goes through.

I'd also like to do a browning 1919 build party if anyone has any experience with that.

That should be pretty easy if your using a kit gun (matching barrel and front trunnion). Just need to rivet it all in your new receiver.

A professionally bent receiver with rails installed is the way to go. Has the old receiver pieces been removed from the front and rear trunions? Has the long rivets been removed from the rear trunion? Do you have a drill press?

I will have to dig my old kit out ... I, too, will go with the spud receiver with rails ....

Looks like we need a coast trip ... maybe a little fishing while we are there ...

Re: AK build party..

Post by SubGunFan on Mon Jun 11, 2012 7:58 pm

A well equiped shop is a BIG PLUS.... Someone who knows how to use shop equipment is even a BIGGER PLUS.

Some steps of an AK build from a kit (w/ barrel).....

1. Kit tear-down: Removing the cut receiver pieces from both trunions. This requires a bench grinder or angle grinder to grind the rivet heads. Removing the trigger guard/mag release from cut receiver. This can be done with an angle grinder or Dremil being careful not to scratch the guard. Drilling out the long rivets in the rear trunion can be a PITA. We will need many drill bits of the same size as we will probably break some. Stock removal is easy. If we go with rivets in the front trunion, the barrel must be pulled. This can be a PITA. On some kits the barrel pin can be a b*tch to remove. If we go with U-drives or screws the barrel can stay in the trunion. I suggest U-drives as screws will require "bottom of the hole" thread tapping (aka: more broken tools). I have a U-drive AK that is holding up great (and the U-drives were not done correctly).

2: New receiver assembly: Bent the flat. This requires a special jig and the flat can NOT move during bending. Spot weld both rails to the receiver after the rails are carefully aligned. This requires a quality spot welder or the welds will not hold. A pitfall here is having spot welder electrodes that will fit inside the receiver. Heat treat (and anneal) the hammer and trigger pivot holes and the ejector (which is on one of the rails). Finish the receiver by parking or bluing. As you can see from all of this..... buying a professionally made AK receiver is worth the $$$$.

3. New AK assembly: Some receivers require you to drill the trunion rivets holes. The old pieces of receiver can help with this. Set the front trunion rivets using a "rivet squeezer" and backing bar. Install the barrel and barrel pin (again, possible PITA). Install the rear trunion rivets. NOTE: Getting a rounded head on the rivet is NOT easy. Install the trigger guard/mag release rivets using a hammer, punch and backing bar. Install the stock and grip. Install the trigger and hammer. This is not too bad if you know a few tricks. Re-assemble the rest of the AK and keep your fingers crossed it fires........... Smile

Finally.............. In addition to buying a commercial AK receiver, I suggest buying a TAPCO rivet set and G2 FCG (single hook) which will give your AK a nice trigger pull. NOTE: If you can find a comm. AK receiver with trigger guard/mag release installed for about $20-30 more, I would buy it. It is not that the old TG/MR is hard to install, it is because the finishes will match and there will not be "SNAFU marks" on the TG/MR..... Smile

OK, as for an AK building party........ Since the correct shop equipment is so important, I suggest we take beltfed's offer to use his. I know the Coast is a long trip for most of us (and 1 or 2 nights in hotel), but a good shop makes ALL the difference. Plus we all get to beat up on beltfed for a weekend..... Smile Unless the shop has AC, I suggest doing this in a cooler month. I have 4 or 5 AK kits in varying stages of assembly (and be willing to sell a kit or 2 at fair market price). I also have the following.....

Rivet squeezers for both types for front trunion rivets.
Backing bars and rivet punches.
Flat bending jig if we want to try a few flats.....
Misc. TAPCO parts.
Misc. AK parts.

If this AK building party looks like it will happen (aka: date set), I will post pictures of what I have so we know what we still need.

Sounds like SGF needs to join the party.

Since the correct shop equipment is so important, I suggest we take beltfed's offer to use his

Bring it. Ive got a nice large shop used mostly for gunsmithing. I built it myself about 5 years ago. Ive got an 80 gallon compressor, electric and pneumatic grinders/ P grinders ect, hand drills, Drill press with small milling vice, 20T shop press, torches, MIG welder, hammers, punches, files..... yadayadayada.

Unless the shop has AC, I suggest doing this in a cooler month.

I dont have ac out there, and it gets pretty toasty but I manage to spend most all my days and nights out there. Ive pressed a couple barrels from AKs before and have that little bit of experience. Unfortunately I am active duty and will be leaving on a work trip in September so I can only volunteer my shop until then.

I have no problems letting yall in, Id even provide quarters but our home is small and I have a 1yr old you dont want to hear squealing. Im right on the coast in GPT and theres plenty of lodging and plenty of places to go test fire within 20 minutes.

All I ask is that yall provide your own drill bits (local procurement), yall aint tearing up my fancy drill indexes, and maybe SGF sell me one of his parts kits at a fair price so I can play too. I can get some good BBQ and a fish fry going on yall just BYOB.

Offers on the table.........

One more thing, LT Dan is right down the road, you MIGHT get him to refinish your newly built AK for a decent price. Sorry to throw him under the bus but he might be willing if hes not too busy with other paying customers guns.

I built several of these back when kits were less than $100. unfortunately for you guys I have sold all my tooling. Be very careful if you press your barrel in, if done in a hurry or incorectly you run the risk of bending your reciever. I used a piece of 1/4" allthread and pulled my barrels into place.

I did two builds a few years back, first was screws (No access to the needed tools for that one!) and second (As the Good Lord and Mikey K. intended) was with rivets. Never have been satisfied with the screwie, it just don't feel right, lol. Gonna have to take it apart and do it right one of these days.

This is it, Romy G, receiver from a Tapco flat ............... Definitely buy the pre-bent receiver, lol!

DANG Bel..... you are half way there, Bud...... Smile The barrel is even out of the trunion. beltfed, the rear trunion is still attached to the stock (just 2 wood screws) and the sheppard hook spring is next to the front trunion. That looks like the barrel pin behind the safety lever. What I don't see is the other pivot pin (pin next to hammer & spring). We need that part..... Smile What we don't need is the rate reducer and FA sear (which I don't see). Bel, I don't know what you paid for that kit, but someone has saved you a BUNCH of hard work.

I will give beltfed (1st) and poboy26 (2nd) first shots at my Romy-G AK kits if the AK build party happens. Price..... TBD (sorry).

I will take an inventory (and pictures) of the AK kits and parts I have this weekend. That will give us time to order any parts and tools as needed.

I've got a wood stock set for a milled receiver that I refinished, if anyone needs one- I might be willing to get rid of it for a few bucks??
