Ruger LCP Jamming Issues

Post by JM2 on Mon Jun 11, 2012 10:47 am

My Dad has a Ruger LCP that jams toward the bottom of the clip. Tried cleaning..different ammo...and taking the spring out of the clip. Everything looks fine...but I am far from an expert. Anyone have advice on fixing the issue?

I have heard that those "lil" 380 guns LCP, P3at and such all operate best with 'premium' ammo, and be well lubed. maybe you could try to get a new mag and try.

That was my next step. After realizing there is a "search" feature on here...I read some other threads about the same issue...unfortunately it's fairly common. Is Lake Valley Gun Works still open in Starkville?

It could be something as simple as you limp wristing the gun when shooting it

Let a friend shoot it and see what happens...

after that try several mags

after that dump it.....380's are under powered and fickle...you put your life at risk if you consider it a carry weapon....I just as soon have a rock...pretty well tells you what I think of .380

Red..appreciate the input..I'm not a fan of the .380 either...but this is my Dad's gun..and he's stubborn. Ha!

This sounds to me like a problem that should be brought up with Ruger. Since you have tries several brands of ammo, cleaned everything, etc., you need to document all that and contact Ruger with the info; if this is common, Ruger knows about it and may already have a fix; if not, they may want the gun returned for their gunsmiths to check it out.

Vick...just by doing a search on this forum the issue comes up numerous times...we're going to try another magazine to see if that solves it...but if not...Ruger may need to be contacted.

Has another shooter been able to duplicate the problem?

Since it seems to only occur on the last couple of rounds, has he tried to only load two or three rounds and check the function from there?

How is it jamming? FTE, double feed, not feeding, what?

How many rounds does he have through it? Has it always done this, or is it a new problem?

Never had a problem out of mine, daughter and I shooting it. For me, I like a solid nose bullet. The Hollow point rounds are small enough that they'll loose their energy and composition shooting into the chest.

Might find something helpful here.... http://rugerpistolforums.com/forums/forum.php

Also, I think some people have had success with changing out the springs. Read that somewhere a while back. Don't have any links.

As far as I know it is I haven't met the guy (Tony Lester) that owns it. I live right down the road from it and pass it everyday. That's bad I know but I haven't needed his services..... yet. I have heard a lot of good things around town about him though.

I have never experienced the problem with mine, but my daughter experienced a FTF problem with her LCP on the last three or four rounds in the mag, I changed mags and polished the ramp and the problem went away.

I have 2 LCPs but never fired either.

But "experts" claim that 90% of FTF problems come from weak mag springs. I had a CZ Rami in .40 caliber that was AWFUL. Turned out everybody had the same problem: rounds would nose dive into the base of the ramp.

Replaced the mag springs with stronger springs from Wolff http://www.gunsprings.com/Semi-Auto%20Pistols/cID1 and it fixed the FTF problem but is now hard to load to full capacity.

My son had one, we had to send it back, kept stacking no matter who shot it. Not a fan of that little gun.

Well...took the Ruger LCP to Gary's Pawn & Gun in Columbus, MS...after letting their gun guy take it home for a few days...turns out all it needed was cleaning...has worked fine ever since...go figure!

Thanks for the update. Glad your Dad's gun is back in service. That's the thing about small, low priced guns - people don't really clean it like a high dollar gun (I plead guilty).

Does your Dad carry it in his pocket w/o a holster? What did Gary's was the major area that needed ceaning/lubing?
I think the 3Pat's "fluff and buff" is good way to break in a small auto.
