Most of tbe small mom and pop gun shops I deal with are usually way cheaper than the big stores. I prefer the small places and would rather give them the business than the larger stores anyway.

Yeah, there's something to be said about knowing the person you're dealing with. We've bought 3 or 4 from Richey's in Pontotoc and the price they sit at is fairly comparable, but after talking for a bit, they are usually a better deal. Most of the time, if you've bought a couple, or even your family has, they'll cut you a better deal just because they know you'll be back next time. Besides, mom and pop shops care about their reputation, and wanna do right with you, so are usually the most helpful when something goes wrong.

Don't get me wrong though, that's not every one of them. And my experiences have been with shops not on major highways. Shops in Jackson may be a little different.

I am from Clinton. Try to support my home town people, (Surplus City). They are close pricewise to other vendors in Jax metro area. Don't know(or care) what folks in Columbus or the coast are charging. At $3+/ gallon, my 3/4ton 4x4 would burn $100 woth of gas round trip either destination.

Secondly, I appreciate the personal service I get at a local shop. Never had an issue with a firearm, but have had a couple with scopes. Bought both of them there, took the rifle in, they took it off the gun, sent it back to manufactuer, remounted and bore-sighted it both times. Had to pay postage 1 way to the factory.
Customer service is worth alot to me. I don't mind paying a SMALL premium for it. My $.02.

PS.
Surplus City has been around a long time and I try to support them. Bruce

Same thing here in Philadelphia there is a (big gun store pawn shop) well known by several here that is just way to high. Could have something to do with all the hired help walking around bugging you.I have a buddy that has a small shop that tells me he will get me anything i want at 10% above his costs.I think that's fair and he will get my business from now on.

Yeah, Gary's is pretty nice. Both of them, Columbus and West Point. Almost bought my LCR there, but home town store had it for a few bucks more, no taxes, and holster thrown in the mix. Lol, ended up hating the holster, but from what I can tell, that's usually a buy 10 maybe like one kind of situation. They've also did our family right on a few firearms in the past.

I can't argue with you for driving to Columbus though, I still drive to Pontotoc for my gun needs. After buying guns for a few years, sticking with a good dealer probably breaks close to even as just buying the cheapest you can find. It's just a lot more enjoyable for me. Besides, who else is going to show us the error of our ways thinking we don't need that other gun they have?

I try to buy locally, I especially like when I get a deal from an MSGO member. Vans is my favorite place to shop locally. For one thing, they have a huge inventory. Secondly, and something that works for me, is they have layaway. 10% down and they don't care how long it takes to pay for it. If I want something and the price is too high I simply go online. Vans is an example, when I bought my last 1911 I went to Vans with cash, no dealing and the gun was $400 more than what I got it for online. I have also purchased a rifle from Surplus City, I would buy more there but their Handgun selection is pretty limited (For me). Vans, in most cases, does sell guns at the limit of value, and no deals. But the layaway is a real convenience and I don't mind paying in the upper price range (As long as its not more than I can get it online, or the gun is worth) for that convenience. Plus Vans actually has knowledgeable people working for them.

I am willing to pay van's ridiculous prices(on some guns not all) because of their inventory. Anyone with half a brain can figure out it costs them a LOT of money to cover that much inventory. I will buy elsewhere of course, but if vans doesn't have it then neither does anyone else typically

Post by BigDaddyQ on Mon Jun 18, 2012 10:10 am

I have bought more than a dozen probably closer to 2 dozen guns from Vans. They ALWAYS and I mean even from the first gun I bought from them have negotiated price with me. I bought in a magazine once and showed him look here they are closing this gun out for half what you are asking. He came down to real dam close to what they were asking and cut me a hell of a deal on some badger rings and a Burris XTR scope. Then on top of all that when the knob was hard to turn on the light on the scope he sent it back free(no shipping) when it returned and the knob was easy but the light no longer worked he sent it back again free. Each time he bore sighted for me and took care of me. I've bought bows from them too and they have Hoyt and PSE sponsored shooters working there. It means a lot when getting your bow set up not to have some dumba$$ put the wrong helical fletchings on your arrows. I have bought bows elsewhere and have had improperly tuned rests, peep sights, and just wrong sized in general. Plus you can shoot out back of the shop.
I do buy from friends that are FFLs who only charge me a few bucks to get the guns for me, but Van's has always been good to me.
Lastly the employees he has know me by name. When they see me at the Cracker Barrel they come over and say "Hey how have you been? Are you liking that such and such?"

There's one in West Point and one in Columbus on their respective main highways. If you wait long enough, they usually have GREAT sales about twice a year. Pretty comparable the rest of the year, but I been around hearing people negotiate pretty hard with them also.

I pretty much only deal with Gary's. Mainly because I've spent 10's of thousands there, everyone knows me on a first name basis, I worked there, and they always hook me up. I only deal online when they don't have something I want and can't get or online is MUCH cheaper. I honestly hate buying guns online and having to do transfer etc. Plus I like to see what I'm buying in person.

I am stuck down here in SW Mississippi and there is no place with a large selection around here. Bowie's in Natchez is good but a somewhat limited inventory, although one of the best around here for ARs and accessories. There are several smaller pawn shops in McComb and nearby but when you are looking for something specific it is almost impossible to find.

Well, I guess I'm completely different than most of ya'll. Probably because I've never really had a good longtime LGS. I'll buy something online in a heartbeat. I have heard the old saying so many times about supporting local.....it's just a few dollars more...keep your money here. I wouldn't mind paying a few bucks more to a good mom and pop. The problem is most of them are way, way higher than online. I figure if I can buy a gun from bud's gun shop online for $400 shipped with a $20 transfer fee, how can they expect to sell the same gun for $500 plus tax? I can't believe sportssouth isn't giving them a better deal than buds is giving all of us. As far as service after the sale, I think in most cases you paid for that when you bought the gun with the inflated price in the first place. Then again, maybe I'm just jealous because I don't have a local quality shop.

Fortunately my gun buying is usually FTF or looking at shops for items that interest me. I settle for all the old stuff. Gunshows are not an option either. The firearms I want are usually too high in price to consider. I have bought 2 rifles from a dealer in the last 10 years. An AR-15A2 NM and a Ruger 10/22 Ranch Rifle. Both of these rifles were just transfers. Everything else has been 29 years old or older. One German Reiches Revolver I bought was 129 years old. There are no shops in the area that routinely carry firearms that interest me.

I guess I am what you call a hit and miss gun buyer.

I can say that I have never (to my knowledge) priced a firearm $100.00 above buds. Buds appears to price most thing at a low margin above cost. The issue is not that his cost of the weapon from someone like Sports South is a lot lower than mine or any other FFL. (small ffl's may not get the volume discount level of buds or larger volume dealers).
Buds has the majority of their weapons drop shipped from the distributor to the transferring FFL holder. He never logs them into his books and as far as documentation goes, he is not required to maintain any since he never had possession of the weapon. Because of this is where is cost is lower (he has very little overhead in the selling of each weapon). He just collects the money and he is done with it.

Check out Southern Cash & Pawn on State St. in downtown McComb, they have a very large inventory & will order anything you need. Ginn's Gunworks in Tylertown is a good shop with a smaller inventory but he'll order anything and usually give you the 'best' price if you show him what you want in an ad or such(no I don't get commission) lol
As far as my own gun purchases I'm like Doug, of the last 5 firearms I have acquired, one was a private trade, one new purchase, the other 3 Swedish Mausers anywhere from 98 to 110 years old...C&R direct private sales to my house.

I have bought several from Southern Cash & Pawn, Ginn's Gun Works, and 51 Pawn above Bogue Chitto. Their selection does always match my interest. I am at the point I like to look at a firearm before I buy it or I have one in mind I will buy on line and have a local FFL receive it if I don't find it at a local shop. I can go to Baton Rouge and look around but if I find a pistol I like it is not worth having it shipped across the state line to another FFL.

Philly and Gun and Pawn used to be decent but have gone and lost they damn minds these days. My Gen4 G26 at Bretts' was $550 OTD and PGP wanted $589 before taxes...not for me bud Find you some individual with FFL and order on line and have him do your transfers.

Agreed, I have been in to Brett's Gun and Pawn several times. His prices on Glocks are always lower than Philly Gun and Pawn. I had something transferred there last week and the transfer fee has gone up to $25. In all fairness though, Philly Gun and Pawn has a huge selection of firearms.

I have bought several from Van's and been happy with the experience before they expanded the store. Then when I was in there last fall I bought a rifle and they were busy at the time, but as soon as I decided to buy it they were just trying to get me out of there. I had a couple of questions that they acted like they did not have time for. There are a couple of other things that i don't want to go into. I might buy from them again but I will look around for some other choices quicker than I would have otherwise.
