Chinese Type 53 vs. Russian Mosin Nagant M91/30

Post by curtcrowley on Thu Aug 09, 2012 12:00 pm

I went to Century's website earlier today looking to finally buy a Russian Mosin M91/30, and came across the Chinese M53. Does anyone have any experience with the M53?

Both are 7.62x54R. The M53 is 8 inches shorter than the 91/30, and less than a pound heavier.

Link to Chinese M53: http://www.centuryarms.biz/proddetail.asp?prod=RI1968-G

I don't have any experience with these rifles. Between these 2, which rifle is the better choice as a shooter (and perhaps a little hunting)? Are there any problems with the Chinese M53 that I should be aware of?

The t53 are generally in pretty bad condition, lots of dry rot in the wood. They did not take the care with these rifles that the russians did with theirs. The ones i have seen in person were $75 guns at most, no way i would pay what century is asking for them.
The russian gun will be better built and in better shape. I do not trust centuries grading system after what i have seen in person.

I hope to offend no one or their preference by stating the following.

The Type 53 are junk. The Type 53 lacks craftsmanship/manufacturing quality. The stocks are typically rotten and undesirable. The steel usually comes very worn and the bores are very dark. This is not to say there aren't "good" ones out there but chances of finding a desirable one is very small. RW is right on with what he has stated.

If you are looking to get a Type 53 for collection purposes (as a historical Chinese war rifle) then it might make sense to want one. Although there are claims that the Type 53 is more rare, the actual productions numbers are still uncertain. For the past 6-9 months many distributors have been really trying to push these rifles. To get a Type 53 to shoot/use/work may not be as fulfilling as you're hoping.

I would go with the Ruskie M44 between the two. Better than the Russian rifles of this style are the Finnish ones (M91).

Good luck on your decision and have fun.

I heard there was a dealer at the gun show asking $300 for t53s, if I had seen that I probably would have gotten kicked out for laughing at the guy.

Rw heard that from me. He had two of them. Pretty sure they were $350. Pretty good profit margin IF you can find a sucker.
