New Winchester PD shotshells

Winchester® Ammunition has announced an innovative line of personal defense shotshell ammunition for 2010 which includes the Supreme Elite® PDX1™ shotshells in .410 bore and 12 gauge.

PDX1™ .410 bore

The PDX1 in .410 bore has a black hull and black oxide high-base head and combines three plated Defense Disc™ projectiles (sort of flattened buckshot) and 12 pellets of plated BB shot. It is intended for personal protection in short range engagement with the performance needed to stop threats. This load is also suitable for varmint hunting and pest control. Designed for use in the Taurus Judge, this new personal defense round provides maximum protection at close range.

PDX1 12 Gauge

The 12-gauge Supreme Elite® PDX1 has a black hull, black oxide high-base head and 3 pellets of Grex® buffered 00 plated buckshot nested on top of a 1 oz rifled slug, resulting in a tight patterning personal defense load.

slug buck combo's have been around for some time, but nothing really mass produced. I have and always will stick by using HD turkey loads. Remington has a mix shot of called 2x4 and 4x6.. My M4 right now is loaded with 4x6 and the last two in the tube is hornady sst slugs incase they are putting some distance between us. Buckshot to me is more of a offense than a deffense load

The turkey loads are pretty awesome...

looks like Winchester is finally getting on the bandwagon and putting the buzz word personal defense on its ammo line....

Man Does the term Personal Defense and tactical get a bit "overused" these days?...

I will probably try some just for grins....especially since I often carry my Judge

I have always used #4 buckshot or # 4 birdshot

I like the Wichester supreme turkey loads but my Mossy is loaded with Federal 8 pellet low recoil flight control wads.....Pretty badazz round with one nice tight pattern at 20-25 ft which is all I'll ever need....I hope.....Those personal defense rounds are a marketing skeem and are way out of reality in price, cause you can get Winchester Ranger 9 pellet low recoil 25 rounds for less than that..I have found a hot lil load in a cheap package with the RIO low recoil 8 and 9 pellet...check em out.. Hornady Blue hulls are pretty tough also but for the price and good quality 00 you cant go wrong with RIO>>>

I'm no physicist, but I have the feeling that any 1 and 1/8 oz "TACTICAL" 8 shot at 5 yards will have the same effect as any other high priced PERSONAL DEFENSE round.

3" 00 buck in a mossberg 590 is what I use for home defense. Choice #2 would be some cheap rifled slugs.

You can probably use just about anything in a shotgun at close range and it will be effective.

There is really no reason to buy overpriced shotgun ammo just because it is labeled as "personal defense" or "tactical".

They can say "it's more effective" all they want but it can't be anymore effective than dead.

Personally i would like to make my own... lead fishing weights and piano wire... nails

I have heard of people taking factory buckshot loads drilling holes in them and tieing them together with sting about 6 inches apart and deer hunting with them. It destroys a rib cage . I tryed it on paper once and it actually workd .The deer i saw shot with the modifyed buckshot was definatly dead .

"Personal Defense" has become a buzz word that gives manufactures a reason to jack up the price.

Like Beladran said, the PDX1 is just a re-package of the ball and buck.

My "personal defense" shell of choice is 1 ounce of 7 1/2 birdshot in a 12ga. it may not be uber tactical or marketed for this purpose but thats a helluva lot of little lead pellets moving really fast and I suppose it would ruin a badguys day just as well as something that cost 10 times more and if I miss its less likely to ruin my neighbors day

I recently read where a city coroner stated the worst wound (and death) he saw was from a 12ga with birdshot from "across the den area". He stated is was "boom, end of conflict".

Now for distances beyond 10yds (30ft).... I would use 00 BUCK.

i still think buck is overrated for SD in my book buck will always be an offensive load not a defensive. Some 2 3/4-3 inch duck loads like 4,2, or BB

I use the shotgun in my home defense. I would use a 12 ga with 2-3/4 to 3 Drams with 1-1/8 ounce es of #7.5 shot. At close range nothing would be more deadly.

Used some Winchester "Black Clouds" this year on ducks and geese. #2 in 3 1/2". These have the sharp ring around the pellet.These are now in my bedroom gun. The steel kicks less than the lead equivalent and looses some HP at longer ranges. However, at self defense range I believe it would be a moot point.

How did it do on them there ducks ... at what range we you blasting 'em? Over decoys?

O.K. Captain I'll tell the truth. It cuts them up pretty badly. First duck I shot had made a landing outside the decoys at about 45 yds. When he got up I shot him in the back and it butchered him. This is not the preferred load for something I intend to eat from now on. I shot them one morning and my clean kill rate went up. Next day went back to Xperts.
