IMR 8208 XBR-.223?

Post by Greenheadman1 on Mon Oct 15, 2012 8:02 pm

Anybody loading this using 55gr. FMJ? I picked up a pound today to try it out as i've heard good things about the powder but get home to find no info in either of my load data books or online for this particular combo. The guy I buy my powder from told me 24gr but I want to make sure..

Haven't tried it with 223 yet but I couldn't get the results I wanted with my 308. I have been looking for data with 8208 and my 45-70 with hornady 325 ftx

I loaded up some 62 gr. bullets with this powder and I was happy with the results. I don't have my load data with me, but 24 grains of powder for the 55 gr. bullet sounds about right. I would try backing it off to 23 gr. and work up from there. I wouldn't recommend going over 24 gr. unless you can find some load data that says otherwise.

Thanks for the replies...I couldn't find any load data anywhere and I was looking at the load data the other night that came with my lee .223 die set and it has it in there!

I'll post the data up when I get a chance in case anyone else wants to see it. I am going to load up some @ 24gr.

IMR8208xbr loads for 223 Rem

Post by MG Al on Mon Oct 22, 2012 2:12 pm

OK, Here are my best loads for IMR8208. I like this powder, especially in my 20" AR. Note if you are loading LC brass, reduce powder by .4 to .5 grains for the same pressure and MV as commercial brass. Always start 10% lower than target load and work up while locking for over pressure signs. (Like your case coming out in 2 pieces. Pressure might be a bit high.) MV measured 12 feet from barrel. Groups at 100 yards from bench rest.

PMC cases, Fed 205M primers, IMR8208XBR - 24.0 grs., Hdy VMAX - 55 grs., COL 2.250". From 20" barrel, MV 2,867 f/s, ES 39.50, SD 12.00, Best 5-Shot Group (B5SG) .467".

PMC cases, Fed 205M primers, IMR8208XBR - 24.5 grs., Hdy VMAX - 55 grs., COL 2.250". From 20" barrel, MV 2,954 f/s, ES 23.03, SD 7.07, Best 5-Shot Group (B5SG) .605".

The loads I loaded with 25.0 grains had acceptable statistics, but the groups opened up some. MV was 2,997 f/s from a 20" barrel and 2,914 f/s from a 16" barrel. Note that group size may be the results of my shooting. B5SG = 1.635, but I had 4 of the 5 in .954".

I hope this helps.
