Banana Clips Jamming?

We have a Ruger 10/22 that we bought a couple of (cheap) 30 round banana clips for. Both of them jam up on every 2nd round. We have no experience with them, just bought them & trying them out. Does anyone know why they would do this? besides being cheap Is there a remedy for it?

What brand clips? I have better luck with the banana clips than I do with the Ruger 10 round rotary clips which also seem to jam primarily on the 2nd or last round........I use the Butler Creek "steel lips"...I've heard of problems with the plastic clip lips.......

Hey man! I told ya they were cheap! We be talking about plastic clips that I bought online. Eagle International is the brand.
Looks like I'm gonna have to go spend more.

I actually have several of the Eagle 30rd mags ... like TomBomb said above, I have had more problems with the factory rotary mags than I have had with the Eagle 30rd. Own 3 10/22s and the Eagle seems to work just fine for me. I have sent 2 rotary mags back to Ruger -- they sent me 4 in return; however, one of them still gives me a problem .... I have heard that the Butler Creek is a good magazine ... Different gun seems to like different magazines sometimes ....

Mine did seem to work better after a "break in" period - many rounds..... and after cleaning/oiling the feed part of the clip...... Rem-oil works very well......... AND I switched to a lighter, faster 22LR round.......

We've had no problems with the clips that came with the gun.
And the banana clips are new. These were the first ones we've tried thru them. We'll keep shooting & give the oil a chance to work too.
Tom, what were the lighter, faster ammo that you bought?

Have never had a problem with the rotary mag supplied with my rifle...not one time...Thousands of rounds

I learned more about the Ruger 10/22 than I ever wanted to know during my time as a Beta tester for the Akins Accelerator. I love the little Rugers but they are all over the place from month to month and year to year. I had five 10/22s at one time, and two absolutely hated Eagle mags which was unfortunate as I was a distributor for Eagle and paid less than six bucks each by the case. You'll likely find your gun will choke on some ammo and love another. Most of mine hate Federal ammo, but your gun may love it. Try several different types to see what your gun functions and groups best with.

A prolonged break in period may be required and cleaning out the paint where the bolt rides inside the receiver, (your receiver is painted aluminum), will probably help. Silicone spray from WalMart is great stuff for lubing the plastic mags. Oil will attract grit and .22LR is the nastiest, dirtiest round I know of, and Ruger is making them cheaper every year. If yours is of new manufacture, you probably have a plastic trigger group.

Exactly what type of malfunctions are you encountering?

I like the 30 grain Aquila ammo.... but mine likes the cheap federal ammo too....but does not like the 50 gr. remington.....

No problem on the smarty pants.
It's pretty new. We just got it in April & haven't shot it a whole lot.
We bought the new mags just a few weeks ago & just started shooting with them.
What they do is just not feed when you're shooting - about every second round. They just hang up & won't fire. We pop them out & the next one does fine. We plan to shoot them, oil them, clean them & just fool with them till they get better. Either that or just chunk them & get more.

IMO the rotary originals definitely are the most reliable. I mostly use the E and L dual mag holders to butt two of the OEM's together. look

but I'm really scratching my head trying to figure out how silicon spray or anything that goes on wet is gonna help a mag feed 22 LR ammo

Help me understand if you don't mind....sticky/tacky and ammo grunge equals jamamatic to my way of thinking.

If I was gonna try something it might be some powdered graphite like you would put in a keyed house lock...

The rotary mags obviously function differently than typical banana style and that might be just why Ruger uses em...I figure the mfg knows better than I and they work for me and fortunately I've never seen the need to experiment with anything else

The propellant in the silicone spray dries leaving behind a slick surface. I know that many of the 100+ Beta testers for the Akins Accelerator used this in their high cap mags to ensure smooth follower operation. It worked well for me in a Ruger that ran a little over 600 RPM. I've also used silicone spray in my plastic American 180 drums.

All high cap mags are not created equally and this certainly holds true with aftermarket 10/22 mags. Beta C drums come with a tube of powdered graphite so that may be worth trying.

Thought you may be interested in a photo of a super rare MP-40 bannana mag.
Close inspection reveals the presense of Waffen marks with a light pitina around the edges.
