M1 Garand Ammo

I need some ammo that I can take my garand hunting with? all I have is this



and not sure if this will do it?

anyone have some ammo out there that they will sell me so I can hunt with it? In the Jackson area? all I need is 8 rounds and I cant find any of the Hornady M1 ammo or is there another

My opinion is that the military ball ammo may not be the best hunting ammo... ie poor expansion....will it kill a deer with the right shot...yeah

I cautioned DHoliis51 about using full power hunting ammo for fear it might damage his op rod on that Garand of his...

but I could be wrong...don't wanna mess up a piece of history

U might try to find some reduced recoil ammo from Federal or Remington

If you can't find any I'd hunt with the surplus ball....neck shoot 'em

I have a Schuster Adjustable Gas Plug sitting around here somewhere if you want to borrow it. Permits you to shoot commercial ammo through the garand withoout damage to your operating rod. Let me know if you want to use it and I can meet your somewhere ... .

thanks Cap. I would love to but you would have to show me how to install it and all that good stuff. would love to meet up with you one day and let you look over my M1 and let me know what kind of condition it is in and show me how to take care of it. all it does is sit in the closet and we haven't shot it in a while.

I am off from 11-1 every day for lunch M-F so lets meet up one day maybe next week or the week after christmas if that is ok with you.

Sounds good to me -- it is actually very easy to install; however, you will need to shoot a couple rounds in order to get the pressure setting right for the ammo you are going to use. I suggest 4-6 rounds usually does it ...

so when you install this you can use all ammo or still certain kinds?

Just buy commercial SP ammo that weighs 150 grains or less. The powder burning rate on the lighter weight bullets is proper for the M1

Doug is correct on this one -- stay at 150 or below and there should not be a problem ... If you want to go heavier, you will need the plug ..

Here are some old NRA published M1 Garand reloading receipes .. I have not used any of them, so I can not comment ... Maybe Doug has an idea ....

Yes there is; however, I have never done it ... below is a fellow that can do it for you ... I have used him on a couple occassions and well pleased with his work and turn-around time!!

I wouldn't have any problem using your surplus LC ammo. I understand it's a hunting trip and you may only have one shot a a life time buck, but I've had great luck with Lake City ammo from all years. As the others have mentioned, stick with 150 grain bullets or risk breaking your op rod.

IU have fired tens of thousands of the following reloads in my own and our club rifles:

150 gr bullet 48 gr IMR 4895 and a WW primer

165-168 gr bullet 46 gr IMR 4895 and a WW primer

I do not recommend Federal Primers for the M1. They are soft and it might cause a slam fire. The M1 does not have a firing pin return spring and a soft primer might cause trouble. I have had one slam fire with an AR15 rifle. It was with a Remington primer. I would not recommend Remington or Federal Primers in rifles with out a firing pin return spring. CCI primers would also work well with the M1-M14 and AR15.

Loaded some 147gr FMJBT tonight .. 8rds w44gr H4895 / 8rds 45gr H4895 / 5rds 46gr H4895. Hope to get to the range tomorrow afternoon and see they they do in a garand. Will also put them through the chrony ..

About any day next week is good for me. The afternoon is usually the best for me, but can make an exception if needed .. just PM me with your availability .....

Captain, I am going to have to wait till after the season to get up with you on my M1. I am going to go buy some 150 grain ammo to try to shoot me a deer. I also want you to show me how to shoot that peep sight as well so I might have to take half a day off and learn something from you.
