Best Stripped Upper For The $$ ???

Post by ssanders224 on Thu Dec 13, 2012 9:04 am

Guys,

I'm looking for suggestions on what stripped upper I should buy. I'm ordering all the parts for another AR build, and cant decide on an upper reciever. I realize all the forged ones are basically the same thing, but I thought some of you seasoned AR gurus may have some suggestions on which ones are the better value. I'm not looking for anything fancy or billet, just a good upper.

The ones I'm considering are:
LAR Grizzly from Joe Bob, http://www.joeboboutfitters.com/PhotoGallery.asp?ProductCode=LAR%2DA4UPPER. This seems like a good value, but I'm worried that the Teflon coating will not match my PSA lower?? (yea yea, I want it to look good)
Core 15, http://www.core15rifles.com/core15-upper-receiver-parts-installed-100324.html
Noveske, http://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=2118
Mega, http://megaarms.com/ar-15/upper-receivers/forged-upper/

For all I know, these are all exactly the same thing?? So I'm just looking for some insight.
I'll be putting a Rainier Match 16" .223 WYLDE barrel in it, and NIB bcg if I can get my hands on one.

Thanks for the opinions!

I think the JoeBob LAR is a great deal! http://www.joeboboutfitters.com/LAR_Grizzly_A4_Upper_Assembly_Forged_M4_Flat_Top_F_p/lar-a4upper.htm

Do you have personal experience with this one?
My only concern is that it is "teflon" coated, and might not match my PSA lower very well?

Sorry, no experience with it just from looking at it I agree it's a good deal. I would imagine you're right, there would be a bit of a shine on the upper vs the lower, all the PSA lowers I've seen have more of a matte finish.

Very rarely do uppers and lowers match, color-wise. If it bothers you, cerakote it.

Yea, I hear ya.
I'm not worried about a little difference in annodizing coloration.... Just dont want a "shiny" teflon upper on a very matte PSA lower...
(I'm assuming the Grizzly teflon is shiny... never seen one in person)

I built my brother's AR using a aero precision stripped upper and a psa lower the color matched. I've heard Aero makes psa's lowers and uppers

Hmm, the Aero looks like a good deal.
I guess I just need to pick one. You hear rumors about them all coming from the same few manufacturers... but I wish there was more evidence to back that up.

LAR = Grizzly, Bushmaster (L Prefix), Ameetech, (?)DPMS, CMMG, Double Star, Fulton, Spike's Tactical, Noveske (new)
MMS = Mega, Gunsmoke, Dalphon, POF (forged), Alexander Arms, Stinger, Spike's Tactical(old)

Yea, I saw that the other day.
I'm leaning toward the Aero now. I mean it makes me feel all patriotic and stuff, ya know?? Smile

Well, I ended up going with the Surplus Arms and ammo stripped upper.
I talked to Surplus arms and Aero precision, and the upper marketed under the Surplus Arms name is made by Aero Precision. It is the exact same reciever as the $75 Aero, just without T markings and American flag.

So hopefully it will turn out to be a good one.
