Shortages of Reloading Supplies?

Post by Evil Zim on Sat Jan 19, 2013 10:22 pm

I've been following the Ammo shortage discussions elsewhere on the site and was getting ready to pick up some small pistol primers at Bass Pro or Van's. any corresponding shortages on such reloading components?

I haven't seen as many shortages in reloading supplies as I have ammo. Part of that might be because primers are running $6/100 here locally in Starkville (I haven't been out of town to check prices yet).

Van's has a ton of primers in, got some small rifle yesterday and there were plenty of small pistol too, which I thought was unusual. They were pretty limited on powder though.

No primers to be found in Tupelo. Scruggs put me on the call list for small pistol and small rifle. Said they had some coming in the next day or two. I was stoked. They called. I ran. Only to find out that the small pistol didn't come in, and I could buy only 2 small rifle. 2. Not 2 boxes. 2 packs of 100. Yep. 2 packs per customer is the current policy. The one fella at the counter said I could have 4 packs since the small rifle didn't come in. I'd have thought with Scruggs being a Basspro affiliate they'd be able to have a little better supply than this.

Decent rifle powder is getting really hard to get....I still see pistol powder...I guess it won't be long and that's all gone...Guess I'm gonna have to park some guns for a while.

I have never seen anything as bad as it is now. Hell...finding any brick 22 ammo is a major challenge right now...

Why did they have to pick on the plinker ammo? I'm not sure I understand. Is it because of the AR-15 22's? Or are people just going nuts and buying anything on the shelf?

I bought a little 22 rifle over the break... Been rationing the 225 round pack I finally found since then, which is terrible when it's an semi-auto. Plinkers are not that fun when I can shoot my reload 38's more often and cheaper.

My opinion, and refer to my signature regarding opinions below, is that many own 22 rifles. Even "non gun owners" have a 22 in many cases. And with the popularity of plinking, it is easy to see how this ammo can disappear so fast.

I looked the other day at Sportsman's. Some primers were on the shelf. Think they were 3.30 per pack. Don't think there were any sp.

Van's still had lots of primers as of Thursday.

Lots of holes in the rifle powder selection.
Bullet selection has taken a hit as well.

I understand the 223 ammo shortage. The 22 ammo shortage of even lesser quality ammo is a real tough one to get my head around. Don't we have a Winchester 22 ammo plant in Oxford ?

How does one explain shortages of large and magnum rifle powders. Give me a break

Just an FYI for those looking for powder... I was at Carr's in Saltillo today and he still has most of his powders in stock at his normal price. Don't expect him to sell you more than 1-2 lb of any specific powder, but he has it in stock. He has most of the popular rifle powders in stock, like Varget, IMR 4895, IMR 4350, BL-C(2), RL-15, CFE 223, etc.

I don't think there's a lb of rifle powder left in the Jackson area.

Looked at Powder Valley yesterday and they are starting to get more powders in stock. Still short on .223 primers, but they seem to have a better selection than a couple of weeks ago.

I was fortunate enough to even get a lb of the Vihtavouri N350 powder. Leaf River Sports in Petal had it and it was the last one. Smokeless powder is pretty much gone in the Hattiesburg/Laurel area.

I didn't notice much of a shortage in Van's this weekend! Was there with 45flattop and met suberjc while there. Nice shop and enjoyed meeting with a couple of fellow posters.

I have a store a couple of miles from me. When I order something, I can have it shipped here and pay shipping and tax. Or have it shipped to the store and only pay tax.

Hornady doesn't have the .223 bullets in stock for the Get Loaded promotion. I called a few weeks ago before sending in my redemption form and was advised to select the revolver or large rifle bullets if I wanted my bullets quicker.

I agree, dhollis51. I bought a new Hornady press and 5 sets of dies last year. I wound up with 1,000 bullets from Hornady for about $40 in shipping. About 600 were the XTPs. The 185-gr .45 shoot great in both my XDM and 1911.
