1911 in .45ACP in a more upgraded profile such as the Kimber Tactical Custom HD or any one of the ddozens of others with the same bells and whistles.
In a revolver I'd want either a 1917 S&W in .45 ACP or a K-frame 357.

I love a 45 but I'd have to go with the Beretta 92FS if I could only have one semi and a Ruger GP100 would be my choice revolver.

i have heard the taurus version of the 92fs is better?
i have shot the taurus version during break-in.
i had no opinion because it was still being broken in but what you think?

For CC a Kimber Covert ultra II in 45 acp.
Re: if you could only have one pistol for the rest of your life
Bens, I've shot a couple. I don't think I could agree that the Taurus is better. Cheaper yes, better no. I've heard that it's made on old Beretta equipment and may be a fine gun but Taurus quality can be iffy. I like their revolvers more than anything else they make. I have never had a quality issue with any Beretta. Mine have been flawless so far. The fit and finish is definitely not as good as the Beretta product. The only Taurus I have is the 709 (my wife carries it) and it has been relatively trouble free but not totally and I don't think that there's enough difference in money to persuade me to want the Taurus 92. That's just my opinion though.

Re: if you could only have one pistol for the rest of your life

after 10yrs of trying them out , the hard way ,buying and trading. i've settled on 9mm. i had a few .45's, it just isn't the round for me. too many .40's go "kaboom" and anything less than 9x19mm is questionable, IMHO. i did buy my wife a surplus cz82 in 9x18mm mak. but i wish i would have kept with 9x19.
the above pistols are all great, and are all very different in operation. i like the glocks "safe action" striker set-up. there is something almost majic about a browning high-power. the cz75 was on my "want" list for a few yrs. mine still sits unfired, since i just got it a few weeks ago.
whatever you go with, get a well proven design, not the newest bestest thing on the market. there is a reason why so many leo's and militaries use what they use, cause they work.

jms, i definately have an affinity with the 9x19 round myself. i even like the 380 acp round. something about that general size makes it a remarkable shooter

Hang in there Neck, the EMT's are on their way!
And I hear ya. I like a 1911. Heck, you saw the picture of my Sig 45 in the photo section but give the Beretta a little credit here. It's durable, capable of handling hi-cap mags and the 9mm's not a bad round. And mine just feel good to me.
But (for the time being) I'm thankful that I don't have to have just one...
