Which Ruger MKIII should I buy?
I want an accurate .22 pistol and am thinking about buying a Ruger MKIII. Should I buy the S.S. Hunter with the 7" fluted bull barrel (model 10118) or the S.S. Competition with the 7" Slab side barrel (model 10112)? What are the major differences between the two, price is about the same. Please let me know if there is a different model and/or manufacturer you recommend. I would like to stay under the $500 mark.

I would buy the 5.5" bull barreled target model . It is the least expensive pistol available. I see no reason for stainless steel firearms.

Doesn't anybody like the plain blue 6 7/8" Target Model?

I have a Mark II in 6-7/8" tapered Target. It is not as versitile as it can't be used in International competition.

Well, I'm SOL when it comes to international competition. Besides that, though, I think I'll keep it.

I bought the 22/45 for about $220 on sale. It has a bull barrel. I don't know what is upgraded from it to the target models you are referring to. It has the optics rail, so that shouldn't be a problem. Trigger needs upgrade for a competition gun.

Justin, where you gonna get it upgraded? I want one with the optics rail also, that come with it? You got a good deal on that for 220.

I like the new 22/45 that you can change the grip panels on. 5.5in barrel and target sights

I am not upgrading the trigger, but th optics rail came with it, just bolts to the top. It is drilled and tapped. I bought it last year at "Ruger Days" at Gary's Pawn and Gun in Columbus.

I bought a Mk II Government Target thinking I had to have the extra length and added sight radius. I wish I had a 5" barrel for carry comfort and ease of use. Unlike Doug I don't shoot any organized matches and don't need to fullfil any match rules. The shorter heavy barrel feels good and handles great. I really doubt you will be able to tell any difference in the two other than the carry and handling ease.
I thought about building a new squirrel gun a while back. The base gun was going to be a S&W model 41 5" heavy barrel. That isn't because it is any better than the Ruger but because I don't have one and wanted one at the time. I never got around to doing it and the "want" kinda cooled off.
In my opinion the most reliable, most economical and easiest to accessorize semi auto 22 lr handgun is the Ruger Mk???. All three models are very good pistols.

Okay Gun, why do you like the competition model better? They are priced about the same. I don't know if I like the v-knotched rear sights of the Hunter, does the Competition have the same type rear sight? I do like the fiber optic front sight of the Hunter. I'm new to the world of competitive shooting, will the Hunter version not be allowed in areas where the Competition will be allowed?

get the hunter if you like the sights and barrel design.
I want to test it when you get it though. might need to get me one.

i think he is leaning way over to hunter model, which would be a good one.
I looked at some dealer exclusives on the Ruger sight that were nice. one even had some red, white, and blue laminate grips. NICE.

Okay, I bought the S.S. Hunter with the fluted 7" barrel. I test fired it yesterday and plan on sighting it in today. Great looking pistol and operated flawlessly out of the box. This may be my first MKIII but I have a feeling it will not be my last.
