38 Special "Light" reload suggestions
Can anyone recommend a few loads for 100 Gr wadcutter load in 38 special.? All my load data seems to start about 148 gr.
I need to load up a bunch of real light plinkers for the wife and daughter to train with in a 357 Mag S&W 686 4 in
I'm thinking about 3.0 to 3.5 gr of bulleye....but that's what you use on a 158 Gr SWC bullet
This load keyholed in a small 442 revolver...gonna see what it does in a longer barrel today.
These 100 gr bullets actually weigh 108 gr.
The general rule on lead boolits is to use more powder for a lighter boolit to start correct?
The 686 likes a 158 Gr SWC with 3.5 bullseye....But I wanna go softer for the newbies with these 100 Gr lead bullets.
How about a few other powder recomendations....Maybe Unique....Green Dot
Thx

My Lyman Cast Bullet book doesn't show a 100 gr. wadcutter...shows a 92 gr. roundnose (Linotype). That's about as close as I can come up with.

Re: 38 Special "Light" reload suggestions
i loaded some 100gr cast bullets with 2 grs of bullseye and shot them in my reloading room at a 10x10 by 36" long peice of wood.
From 15' they stuck in the wood about 1/8" of the boolit sticking out. It was pretty fun.
Shot these out of my LCR the other night.

My wife and daughter are gonna cut their shooting teeth on these...so I need em accurate to a point about 15 yards and light recoil...I want them to enjoy their 1st handgun experience....training with Cliff...They'll shoot a 22 LR and 9mm pistol as well

Re: 38 Special "Light" reload suggestions
I was going to suggest 2.0 to 2.5 gr bullseye but nonnieselman beat me to it ... 3.0 should be OK giving you about 700-750fps.

WOW...I can go as low as 2.0 Bullseye...talk about economical!
I thought starting charges were higher for lighter bullets....
I'll try from 2.5 - 4.0 bullseye then....
Did not get to shoot today...Maybe tomorrow

I loaded some 38 spl today. 125 grain lead lasercast bullets over 3.5 grains of titegroup. 4 inch groups at 25yd from a 4 5/8" vaquero at an average of 850 fps. Light recoil too my wife can shoot them and she is very afraid of guns.

Re: 38 Special "Light" reload suggestions
Thanks, I have some Tightgroup and have not opened it up yet...Yeah my wife is very leary...especially with a 4 inch 686...I keep telling her that a heavy gun with light loads is a dream but she keeps seeing that big ole 686...Sigh...
I'm gonna turn her over to Cliff...when He's done the wife will probably shoot better than I do...which would be fine with me...
Main thing is I want her and the daughter comfortable handling them...cause Lord knows I gots em all over the place....Just need for em to be able to take care of business if ole 'Neck aint handy...

I wish i had a Chrono.. i bet with 1.5 or 2grs they would be moving about 400fps
They are fun to shoot tho, especially when the pistol weighs 13 ounces.
Just weighed my LCR on my shipping scale at work, 15.5ounces loaded with 5 125gr +P Corbons

I'm loading 38 spl. 120 gr. rn cast with 2.2 gr. bullseye. Flutterby can shoot 500 in a couple of hours. No sore hands for next days typing. They are on target at 5, 10 and 15 yards.

Dadgum Neck..... 3.0gr of Bullseye with a 110gr bullet sounds kind of HOT to me.............. I would check the barrel of leading...........
IMHO..... You don't want to waste TIME & MONEY on Trail Boss in 38 Special.
