Looks like the conferees came to agreement on something for HB 298, both houses have filed the conference report. They haven't published it online yet, so I don't know what they have decided.

After listening to the reports on other bills today, I'm not feeling too confident that they will leave in the amendment. I sure hope I'm wrong.

The conference report is now available. The senate amendment was pulled.

I am sick of all politicians. So the only thing that came out of this topic is we (Firearms Permit Holders - MS) can carry concealed in a state park?

Park carry was killed the same way last year, at least we made some progress this year, more than I expected with the House leadership. Thanks to all who contacted their Senators and Reps. We'll have to keep it up next time.

A little gain is much better than NO gain!! We will hit it again next year and hope we get more participation with contacting the House members!! We got to work on the North area folks!! I am going to remove this as a sticky ..

The Governor hasn't signed SB 2862 yet has he? Do we have a commitment from him to sign that bill?

It is a shame that churches in Mississippi are still denied the ability to make the decision of whether or not to allow permit holders to carry on property. I guess that "separation of church and state" thing only works one way in the majority of our legislator's minds.

Concealed is concealed. There is a power higher then the Government. Just my opinion is all.

Agreed, however the law shouldn't put local churches in a position to run afoul of the law simply for providing security to their members. I just don't understand the rationale of our law makers in regards to this issue.

You are correct JT, the law should not put a church goer in that situation. But it has. So a church goer has to act according as they are lead.

So much for separation of church and state and people's rights on private property. I guess the President will have to sign federal legislation into law before MS legislators think it is okay to remove the restriction. wall bash

The governor signed SB 2862, so it is now LAW! Starting July 1, 2010, we will be able to carry in parks in MS. Well, at least federal and state ones. I'm betting every town in MS puts up "no gun" signs in every local park now.

Don't we have a state preemption law?

Yes:
§ 45-9-51. Prohibition against adoption of certain ordinances.

Subject to the provisions of Section 45-9-53, no county or municipality may adopt any ordinance that restricts or requires the possession, transportation, sale, transfer or ownership of firearms or ammunition or their components.

BUT:
§ 45-9-53. Exceptions.
(1) This section and Section 45-9-51 do not affect the authority that a county or municipality may have under another law:

...(f) To regulate the carrying of a firearm at: (i) a public park or at a public meeting of a county, municipality or other governmental body; (ii) a political rally, parade or official political meeting; or (iii) a nonfirearm-related school, college or professional athletic event;...

But hey, we have a preemption law, right?!
