What is the length of the handguard or forearm on carbine AR-15?

Post by NRA_guy on Fri Aug 16, 2013 7:42 am

I am thinking about replacing the handguard/forearm on my Bushmaster carbine AR-15 with one of those two piece 4 Picatinny rail forearms.

I see some described as being 6 inches and some as 7 inches in length.

But nobody tells how they measure them.

I measured the visible portion on my AR and it was 6 inches.

Are some measuring the overall length and some just the visible portion?

Or do some carbines have different length handguards?

As far as I know, there are only 3 basic sizes.  Carbine, mid-length, and rifle.  If it's a bushmaster carbine, it should take the standard carbine hand guard.

What hand guard are you looking at getting?

Standard length carbine handguard is about about 7ins long but if the two piece say it will snap in of standard handguard I would think it should work whether the description says 6 or 7 inches.

6 " or 7 " , you would still try to mount it?

I have not decided which one. I wouldn't want to spend too much---maybe in the $60 to $90 range. It's mostly a safe queen.

I'd like to be able to mount a vertical grip and light on it.

Why not a magpul moe handguard? You can buy a strip of rail for both(or just a strip for the light if you go with the magpul verticle grip, since it mounts directly to the handguard) and be done with it. Much lighter also. Decent quadrails get expensive quick. I've yet to try a non-free floated quad rail that impressed me. Too heavy and not enough benefits.

You can also get the rails that will bolt on the standard hand guard too.

Interesting. I never heard of the Magpul system.

I'll look at it closer, but I kind of hate to go with a "special" system that forces me to go back to them for accessories. I know they are a good company though and will be around.

Thanks.

Not a lot of going back to them for, just the rail sections and they're dirt cheap. They're more likely to be around than some of these other accessory based companies. I'd say magpul is doing better than most in the firearms industry.

I prefer a free floating rail. If you have a fixed front site, it will have to be removed and you would need to get a new barrel nut. I have bought some kits for around 90 bucks on ebay and have not had any issue. I will say that the barrel nut requires a quality tool though. Some of the cheap tools will break.

Any "carbine" two piece drop-in will work.

Most manufacturers will specify "carbine", "mid-length", "rifle length".
