10/22 upgrades

Alright I have decided to upgrade my 10/22 and want to know where to start? so give me some pointers on where to. I am wanting the works but reasonable $$$.

1. What barrel would you put on it or have you put on yours?
2. What trigger have you put in yours?
3. What stock have you used?
4. What special tools do I need to change out the barrel or any other part?
5. What else am I missing?

I know all about rimfirecentral so don't refer me over there cause I have looked but I trust you guys/gals and value your opinion alittle more.

Drew, you don't have to spend a fortune to tune them up. I put a Green Mountain 20'' blue bull barrell for around 100 bucks, I put a Houge overmold stock, and a bi-pod. I'm still using the stock trigger group ( with some fine tuning ). With the scope, mounts and everything, including the price of the gun I have got somewhere in the nieghborhood of 400 tied up in mine.
The barrel is not that hard to change , no special tools needed. Hope this helped alittle.

I.E. tactical or tack driver?

Thanks Msneck, She's a tac driver I really enjoy shooting this rifle. Mostly shoot as distances I have no bussiness shooting at. But I enjoy trying to kill crows at 300 yds..........Don't laugh...... It can be done............Just haven't done it yet..........

If I could only choose 1 part for my 10/22, it would be the Volquartzen hammer. HUGE difference in trigger weight and feel.

Get you some high-cap mags, and an aftermarket extractor, too.

You don't need special tools for the 10/22.

tack driver would be nice. something not too heavy also cause it would be a tree rat gun also.

Really easy!

The extractor you can install with a pick. It is held in the bolt by spring tension. Just be careful not to launch the plunger and spring behind it. You really only need very basic tools with the 10/22.

Second the Volquartsen hammer. Watch the website and you may be able to pick up a blem for around $20. So far, I picked up a Whiteface Mountain (Green Mountain) barrel for $55; a Volquartsen blem hammer for $20; a used Boyd's thumbhole stock for $58. Put it all together and you can cut the staples from your targets @ 25 yds and it is not difficult to keep them around a half inch @ 50. Keep your eyes open and be patient and you can pick up some bargains.

Don't be overwhelmed by rimfirecentral. Just pay attention to the posts by nemohunter, skeeter27red and picher. Use the search feature and the stickys; you will pick up a lot. These guys have already tried most of the things you will consider.

Third on the VQ hammer! What's interesting about the 10/22 is the "trigger job" consists of working on the hammer. An after market hammer will be the cheapest and best money spent on any Ruger 10/22 IMHO. I don't care how great your barrel and optics are, if the trigger pull sucks, you'll never shoot a decent group. No special tools are required, and you'll find the 10/22 is a very simple mouse trap to customize.

I've ordered a number of Ruger 10/22 parts from Bob Martin, owner of Cheap Gun Parts and I've always been very satisfied. He's out of Mobile, AL and runs a nice site that's geared toward the care and feeding of the Ruger 10/22.

Volquartsen trigger group, extractor and Hogue overmold on mine.
The trigger group was the whole kit. Trigger has overtravel adjustment and also comes with an extended mag release, which to me is very important with my gorrilla hands.

Still using stock barrel and open sights. I like this configuration. Takes me back several years, just has an awesome trigger.

If I wanted a tack driver and a squirrel gun (i.e. lightweight) I would look into a Tactical Solutions Aluminum barrel or a carbon fiber barrel. I have never shot either but if i was change to a bull barrel and still wanted to be able to tote it I would go with TacSol.

I left the factory barrel on mine.
-Replaced the factory stock (with barrel band) with a Hogue Overmold stock (to get rid of the barrel band and also to provide sling studs) (~$60 at MidwayUSA with a C&R license).
-Replaced the factory hammer with a Volquartzen target hammer (~$35 at MidwayUSA with a C&R license).
-Replaced the bolt buffer with a Wilson Combat bolt buffer (just because...)
-Replaced the factory sights with Tech-Sights peep sights (~$65 at www.tech-sights.com) just because I want to practice with and become proficient with iron sights (cheaper than practicing with a Garand).
-Added 1 1/4" sling swivels ($8 at Academy) and a USGI web sling (~$15 at http://www.appleseedstore.flyingcart.com/)

Now it's a "Liberty Training Rifle", set up to simulate the sight picture of an M-1 Garand or M14 at a fraction of the training cost. If you go to an Appleseed clinic, these are very popular.

I got one stock that is begging to be transformed.

Last one had the Volquartsen trigger package but with an externally adjustable sear to take up pre-travel, thumbhole stock, and a blued helical fluted bull barrel. It was set up target only with a very light (1.5 lbs) trigger with NO slack. Not a very kid friendly package. Too heavy for all day hunting.

Next one will include the standard VQ with a polished sear kit and possibly a carbon fiber barrel. Going the total oposite direction on the weight scale.
Good luck with all the options available. These are versatile rifles with almost no two the same. Post plenty of pics along the way!

Forgot to mention optics. IMHO the best scope for the 10/22 is the Barska 6.5-20x50. Flawless performance for a scope of this price.

what is the parallax on that optic.

Most 22 rimfires are usually set for 60 yards where centerfire are set to 100 usually... Leupold does (150) I think

I've had fits trying to use a centerfire scope on a rimfire
