How safe do you THINK your guns are?

I am one of yall too, but just something to think about.
I have mine in a safe. with 1 on the night stand.
If your house were to burn how do you think your firearms would do? I still think mine would suffer as the temp in the safe can reach temps that are harmful to firearms. At what temp do Glocks melt? just a little something to think about.

So true that's why you need INS on your firearms. That way you would be ok on the replacement of them. Just a thought if you wreak a car you can buy it back from the INS company wonder if you could do the same with your guns?

I automatically get $2500 worth of firearms insurance with my homeowner's policy. I thought that was plenty until I started adding up what I have. I think you get some firearm insurance from NRA just for being a member, don't you? I definitely need a safe. Some firearms are irreplaceable, but maybe they could be restored. I need to check into the NRA insurance. Does anyone know for sure?

I think if you've got a fireproof safe, your house would burn down before your safe contents were damaged. That's going by the UL info about how long the safe keeps your contents safe. I've had mine for 20+ years but think the rating is 2500 degrees for 1 hour, going by an old man's memory, check for yours, I think it's got a UL sticker in there.

Most quality safes are rated at 1200 degrees for a certain time period...say 90 min to 2 hrs...most houses are long gone at that temp....Obviously the lining in these safes makes them heavier to move and more expensive.

Buy the best safe you possibly can....Unfortunately most Ins companies want an arm and a leg for their firearms riders...and $2500 would not even get started good for me.

Most Ins Co also want you to provide them with an itemized list of all items and serial numbers to them....something I'm not willing to do

Yes, I would have to provide serial numbers and have them appraised. I am probably just now to that $2500 mark. I still need to check into what the NRA offers.

Good Luck talking to Ins salesman....He just sells the stuff...its the ins adjusters that screw you over later if you have a claim

If you ever have a claim...its the adjuster you deal with...not the salesman....

Melting point of a Glock---->I believe its softening point is 260 C (500 F) and the melting temperature is 300 C (572 F).

As Gaston would say, "don't worry it is much higher than the melting point of the person holding it".

If you don't provide the list of seriel #'s and appraisel value how are they going to know what to give you if there stolen? You didn't expect them to take your word for it do you? If so I've got over a $1,000,000 worth of guns. Not a chance. You want your house insured they send someone out to look at it to appraise it.

That's why I've chosen to not insure my guns...I've never looked into what the NRA would offer...but $1000 you get with a std membership doesn't even cover the cost of a good 1911 these days.

BTW....Glocks and other Polymers (XD's XDMs, M&Ps Sigma's) are not the only ones suspect to problems...Any firearm all steel or otherwise...exposed to 1000 degree heat or so will be ruined...They will warp and be useless...so don't think if you don't have any polymer guns that you are OK...Them big massive all metal Rugers will warp in severe heat as well.

Best advice I know of is store firearms in a fire rated safe and keep them in more than one location.

This might be another reason why you wanna have a couple grab bags ready to go as well...I've had to clean out my house under duress before because a house 2 doors down was totally engulfed....

Things get "interesting" when the fire chief comes to your house and says....Hey...we might not get this thing under control....anything you value...load it now!

The time to prepare for such an occassion is obviously...NOW

Looking around at my guns... uhm... ya, definitely more than 1K worth.. 2K... 3K.... 4K..... Oy! And no safe to be seen!

Interesting to see how many owners don't have a safe. I will admit to not having a safe for many years, but now that I do I don't think I could live without it. Just a word to those that are in the market. Buy the biggest one you can. They fill up fast and there is no sense in owning 5 small safest that cost $800 da. When you can spend $2000 and get one that leaves you room to expand your collection. One more thing, if you don't want to wipe it down daily get the dull paint not gloss.

+1.. Discount safe in Pearl is good.. And if you buy a good one make sure you get it delivered...

Mine came from Fane safe co. in Covington LA. Had it delivered and set up. Heavy #$&%! *$##*&

I asked my agent once and she said I would need to provide all serial #'s plus value or each. They would write a policy, but My question was "How often will you make changes or update" I buy/sell often and my policy would be constantly out on the desk if I were to get a seperate policy. I also tried the route of insuring my safe plus (xx k) contents and that was a bust too.
Dunno whats best option really.
They may put fire out quick, but the ammo is what will need to be addressed as well.

I spoke to fire chief when they were fighting the blaze 2 doors down.

I told him how much ammo and primers and powder I had....His reply...no big deal.

Powder, primers, ammo are propellants...not explosives

A good approach is to have a seperate safe to store your powder and primers in.

I agree with bigsig...better buy the biggest mutha you can find to begin with

maybe 2 if you can afford......... Wished I had a couple more for stuff....... not guns,just stuff that don't need to get burned up ITSHTF.
