did a little horse trading...

Post by Joe S. on Sat Mar 13, 2010 1:01 pm

got rid of my taurus snubby and my p22 in favor of these two... they are both great shooters.

top is a dan wesson 44 mag. can anyone tell me anything about it? it has "dan wesson 44 mag ctg" on the barrel. id like to get a good holster and maybe some grips for it, but i cant find a model number or anything, unless thats what the "44 mag ctg" is. it will be a hunting handgun. it shoots great! gonna refinish it as well somehow...

bottom is a S&W model 915 in 9mm. ive never been a huge fan of the 9mm round, but this is one sweet shooting pistol!

That looks like a pretty good trade, Joe. I have a S&W 9mm similar to the one you have an it's an excellent shooter as well. The Dan Wesson guns are interesting. That swappable barrel thing is kind of neat. Your model number will be 44. I think I'm correct in that the model number of the large frame Dan Wesson guns were the same as their respective caliber and then they would add a "7" to the beginning if it was stainless. It's a shame the company doesn't still focus on revolvers but I guess that wasn't in CZ's best interest. It should be a good shooter. thumbs up

From the research I've done online it looks like it was made between 71 and 75. It also used to have a purple frame, which was apparently rare...

The Dan Wesson is a good score for sure! Did you get any other barrels with it? I remember when the 915's came out good little budget priced 9mm. I think you came out good in that trade.

All I got was the gun and a holster it don't fit in properly.

I've got a bid in on an 8" barrel on gunbroker now. Maybe I'll win it. Very Happy

Also got a wrench coming from a friend.

How the heck did they change the finish from purple to stainless? Brother has a blue 357. Bought new with 3 barrels. It has the finest finish on any blue steel gun I ever saw and is a good shooter. You probably know this but you need to watch the barrel working loose if you shoot it a lot so you might need to get a barrel lug wrench yourself.

Good find, think you'll like the DW, I have a .357 pistol pack I'll have till I croak LOL. They make some very nice guns IMO.

Good Deal! Like someone said keep an eye on the barrel nut, and enjoy the heck out of shooting it.

Blued Dan Wesson 44 mags are Model 44. The stainless .44s are Model 744.

I've got a 744. I put on a pachmayr presentation grip and it feels great. I had lots of trouble finding a holster as well, but I had a nice form fit one made by the triple K company through this place: http://www.cowboyneeds.com/TK_Holsters.html
It had to be made at the factory and took several weeks but at least I got one. You won't find one in stock in any store.

I just looked at this site and the gun is not listed in there any more, but you may can call them and see if they'll still special order you one. ... or contact the triple K company directly. Other than that, you'll likely have to go with a custom made one or a generic one... very expensive or very crappy.
