My thoughts are that they won't be taken alive. I worked in Memphis for many years and if you killed one of their officers your days were numbered.

I'm just a simple layman, but it's beyond me how the suspects weren't apprehended. They robbed a bank on one of the busiest streets in town. They were then held up by a train at the busiest intersection in town. Exited their vehicle in traffic, walked a few car lengths back to fire at the officers, returned to the vehicle and fled. How does this happen?

I do business at this intersection, and was in the area. The LEO presence following this tragidy was larger than any movie you've ever seen.

I knew the officer who is no longer with us. Sad sad day.

Joe Evans of Starkville was in Tupelo Christmas shopping with his wife and sister-in-law. He said traffic was backed up with shoppers. The intersection is known to be one of the busiest in north Mississippi.

“Three Tupelo police cars came in from the north. One of them pulled off in front of us and two behind us,” he said. “Then I saw the two behind us get out of their cars and walk like they were going after someone, then the shooting started. I didn’t count, but there were probably at least 15 shots if not more.”

His wife and sister-in-law ducked down, and he started looking for an escape route in traffic.

As he pulled off on a side street, Evans said, he saw two police officers lying in the street.

My guess is poor tactics and training. Nobody expects that something like this would happen in small town Mississippi so they train accordingly. My heart breaks for both of these guys but somehow they let the bad guys get the drop on both of them.

http://djournal.com/news/crime-law-enforcement/police-new-albany-following-leads/

Law enforcement is on the ground in New Albany interviewing people and following up on leads regarding a suspect in Monday’s shooting of two Tupelo Police officers.

Authorities are not releasing any information at this time, but there is a car on Baker Street in New Albany that matches the description of the car involved in Monday’s robbery and shooting. It is a Crysler 200 with Louisiana commercial plates with a plate number N337254. A section of the road is blocked off.

The FBI, MBI and U.S. Marshals have been on the ground in New Albany since 6 a.m. today and they are currently interviewing a man. At 11:45 a.m., reporters on scene said four officers went into 515 Baker St

According to tupelo odmp It looks like this is the first line of duty death they have had. Its odd to me because tupelob pd has exceptionally high standards compared to the state standard. However I dont know if they see this type of violence often. I dont believe ive heard much about them facing gun fire. If this is their first death then it will fundamentally change that department and town.

My thoughts are with his family and hopefully the suspect will the purest form of asphalt justice.

The officers involved were stuck in traffic on the way to a bank robbery and were probably not expecting random pedestrians to attack them. I don't know what they could have done differently as reports indicate they were still in their car when the bad guys started shooting.

BTW, Tupelo has lost only one officer to gunfire in the line of duty and this was an accident that occurred back in 1870. The town marshal bent over to scoop some coal into a scuttle and his pistol fell from his shoulder holster and landed on the hammer. Several have been shot since then but all survived.

Prayers offered for both officers especially hoping the
surviving one recovers quickly. The anti crowd is already
trying to exploit this tragedy highlighting that the men
were shot with an AK47, tragedy heaped on yet again by
uncaring leftists with their own agenda that doesn't involve
justice as we would define it.

A spokesperson for the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation would not confirm or deny the information as of Thursday evening, but the NBC affiliate in Chicago says an all-points bulletin was put out in the city.
(WMC-TV) - According to multiple law enforcement sources, tips have led investigators to the Chicago area where they are questioning a person in connection with the shooting of two Tupelo, Miss. police officers.

I was hoping that the offenders would be involved in a tragic hunting accident. That will be tough in chitown. I guess now we have to hope for a tragic car accident or a tragic slip and fall at the jail.

I haven't seen anything about the weapon used by the suspect, nor antigunners exploiting it...not that I doubt it in the least. Could you post a link with this info?

Word on the street indicates the officer who died was shot with a shotgun while the surviving officer was shot with a handgun. I have nothing to confirm this, however.

I was driving from Jackson to Tupelo yesterday morning and must e been passed by 50 police cars from all sorts of agencies during the trip. It seemed like every LEO in the state was in Tupelo yesterday. None of them wanted to be there, I'm sure.

They had much of downtown Tupelo blocked off for the funeral procession. I've never seen so many police cars and motorcycles.

From the information I have it was through the back of the head on both officers. The one who died was straight through. The other went in under the ear and through the jaw. It will take numerous surgeries to have any sort of normal function. I have not heard what firearm(s) might have been used but we will all find out soon enough.

So your info suggests they were shot from behind? I had heard the murderer was caught by a train crossing at crosstown, officers approached him from behind, he exited his vehicle & fired upon them, then escaped down Carnation St. But I have no idea if any of that is true or not.

No offense to any who have posted but are there any primary sources containing exactly how the 2 officers were attacked? I've seen / heard / read ambushed in car, shot from behind, AK 47, sawed off shotgun, leftie with a handgun, etc.
Any primary source link would be appreciated.

Ive seen almost no official statements. All i can dig up is what local media has reported and pictures. Im trying to figure out what type of handgun the suspect is holding. Yall check out the picture because it looks like a large frame auto of some kind.

Rep Tom Miles Facebook page seems to say that the manhunt has ended (caught the cop killer(s)). Haven't seen any other details.

The cop killer caught a few bullets. He was DRT yesterday in Phoenix, AZ.
