A question about WASRs..

I often read posts with things I don't understand, and how to learn but ask?
What does WASR stand for, and how are they different from other AK variants?

the WA if I am correct was a designation for a ban put on the manufacures at one time be it hicap mags, ajustable stocks, etc. and the SR came from SAR semi-auto rifle. I know the WASR-10 where originaly manufactured to only accept 10rd mags.
They are all pretty much the same just diffence in materials and place made and if it has a milled or stamped recevier. Personly I like the yugo's.

They are made for export to the US. Usually they are not made from demilled military weapons as are many AK-clones but from parts made in the same factory, Cugir in Romania, that builds Romanian military rifles. Therefore, the parts might or might not be Milspec.
The receivers do not have dimples - since they are/were intended as lo-cap weapons using single-stack mags, the magwells have been ground out to accept standard hi-cap AK mags. Since these rifles do not have dimples (Intended to lock the mag in place and eliminate side to side wobble) the receivers have rails tacked on the inside to serve the same purpose.
The wood stocks are pretty rough and unfinished.
The Romanian FCG's were made, IIRC, from select fire FCG's and the machine work is not well done. They are prone to trigger slap and have a lot of creep. Most these days use the Tapco G2 trigger, a great improvement.
Some had bayonet lugs and muzzle attachments, some did not. Some were imported with thumbhole stocks but most with pistol grips.
Front sight posts are sometimes canted, a few have canted gas blocks. Usually the canted sight is an easy fix.
They are rougher overall than the majority of AK clones, but they shoot when you pull the trigger.
Get a good one and it will perform as well as an Arsenal build that costs 2-3 times as much as the WASR.

What A Sh*t Rifle Joking, but they are bottom of the barrel AK's but like all AK variants they will go bang every time you pull trigger. I have 3 Romanian AK's a Wasr 10/63, a SAR-1 and a Draco pistol and have not had any issues with them.

If you want a cheap AK that works and on a budget this is it.

A lot of WASRs are poor quality. The magwells on many are incorrectly cut, which causes the magazines to wiggle too much or feeding failures. I wouldn't purchase a WASR without going into a store and thoroughly examining it.

I have many thousand rounds through mine. She might not be the prettiest girl at the ball but she works all the time. I have mag wobble on mine but it has never been a factor. I have heard of some guys using pennies as shims to work out that particular problem. The canted gas block thing is a bit more problematic, but I haven't seen one of those in a while. Hands on before you buy and shoot if you can is not a bad idea.

only buy one in store. one with straight front sight post and barrel, Tapco G2 trigger, smooth/decent action, and reasonably priced. I have found that tapco mags cut down on the mag woble. and if doesnt fit can always sand a little off the sides to fit just right. a lot of the ones I have seen recently have had metal plates welded in the mag well.
