lethality of a 22 LR

Post by useto on Tue Apr 20, 2010 4:33 pm

My Bro-in-law found this interesting article posted on another site. It is truly worth reading. It answers questions that we were debating.

I have killed a few critters with the .22LR
Everything from Rats to Deer.

We were riding around the farm one night a few years ago on the 4wheeler. My buddy saw a sneaky doe eating some corn off a stalk, he looked at me and said get her. lol
One shot and she took a dirt nap, didnt take a step or anything, only a 50yd shot but hey it was fun.

It's always surprised me how many folks underestimate the .22 lr, have had more than 1 game warden tell me most poachers they catch are caught with a .22 and a headshot deer.

I must say the OPs info had some facts new to me also though...good read.

Now someone needs to do the same thing with a pocket .22. I bet the results will be quite different. You need some barrel with that round.

I LOVE .22 rifles! I have several and will never have enough. I can't wait to finish the resto on my abused, pawnshop freebie Glenfield model 60. The squirrels on the stock are so sexy!

The best .22 rifles that I have ever had consisted of a Ruger 10/22, Henry lever action, and a Marlin model 60. Thats my top three rifles. now my top three pistols are Chiappa 1911/22, Walther P22 , Ruger MKII thats just my 2 cents

Amazing. I knew .22lr could do some damage to some good distances but never would've guessed that. Now i need a 10x scope on my .22 sniper

I understand the Mossad used to be quite fond of their Beretta 70s and had no problem with lethality. I've seen too many hogs killed with a .22 revolver not to believe it is effective, if properly placed.

Makes me want to try the same test with the ammo that I typically buy and use with my Ruger 10/22 and Ruger MKI. Cheap bulk Remington and Federal copper plated round nose and hollow point. Of course I also have some CCI mini mag and other assortments.

Good article but I'd have to call B.S. on the 330 yard rabbit. I'd put money on anyone hitting a rabbit size target at that range right out the truck. But that being said, I know a lot of guys who jumped a deer and brought it down at 50-75 yards when squirrel hunting and such. Saw it done once, not by me though.

i shoot critters with hard shells on the river anywhere from 10 to 350 yards with a 10/22 on a regular baisis . and have gotten lucky with my old open sighted marlin more than once. i wood video tape it but my camera doesnt zoom that good and the shelled critters havent been sitting on logs since i worked up loads for my AR 15.

Thought y'all may enjoy this... I first saw this in Outdoor Life (I think) years ago... Here is a direct link.

Here’s one heckuva cool story for all you bear-hunting aficionados.

On a spring day back in 1953, 63-year-old Bella Twin and her friend Dave Auger were hunting grouse and picking berries near Lesser Slave Lake in the Swan Hills of northern Alberta, Canada. As the story goes, they were walking an oil-exploration survey line when they ran into a humongous grizzly bear following the same line toward them. The two feared that if they ran, the grizzly would notice them and give chase, so they hid in a brush pile and hoped the big bruin would pass without any trouble.

Unfortunately for the bear, it was intent on getting its share of berries and came very near Twin and Auger. Frightened by the close encounter, Twin raised the rifle she was carrying and fired. Her aim was dead on. The grizzly was struck in the head and fell dead.

Bella’s bear was no ordinary griz. Its skull scored 26 5/16, placing it at the top of the list of Boone and Crockett world’s records where it stayed for many years. The bear currently ranks number 30 among the all-time records and still stands as the longest-reigning provincial big-game record in Alberta.

In the half century since Twin killed her record grizzly, many differing accounts of the incident have been given. However, all of them agree on one thing: little Bella Twin killed that 1,000-pound-plus griz with the humblest of all rifles—a single-shot, bolt-action, .22-caliber rimfire. With just one long-rifle cartridge, this petite Cree Indian grandmother finished off one of the biggest grizzlies ever documented and earned remembrance as one of the world’s truly legendary hunters.

I knew of the Mossad use of the 22 for discrete removal of Terrorists from this planet in crowds no less. The penetration at 300 yds. was surprising, but I guess it shouldn't have been. Besides the fun factor I've always had respect for 22.

I like the CCI Mini-Mag in my 10/22. I wonder how it stacks up on this test.

One can knock bowling pins over at 200 yards all day long...I'm betting that 330 yard shot had some luck behind it though.
