shotgun for home defense what choke

Post by e.martin on Sun Apr 25, 2010 9:49 pm

Have been think about a scattergun for a home defense gun (another reason to buy something)

But that got me to thinking what kind of pattern are you looking for in a shotgun do you want tight for max punishment or wide open to be shure you hit what your pointing at and possiblely his buddy. thinking

I don't think it matters. The distance you will shoot a BG at (less than 10 yards most likely) and will render the difference between chokes negligible.

Most "tactical" or "special purpose" shotguns have a cylinder bore with no choke.

18.5" barrel does not need a choke to be effective at those ranges!

Imp cylinder or modified choke
Will give better groupings with buckshot and slugs at shorter ranges stay away from the tighter chokes like full and extra full.

Shoot it and see what ammo it likes best. Even at 30', I've found some like different ammo from others.
