Surplus AP Ammo

Post by mikey67 on Sun May 02, 2010 4:24 pm

Saw that the CMP will not ship any of the Greek AP 30-06 to Mississippi. Didn't know it was illegal(don't have any). Statues made it pretty clear. Can't get the wine I like shipped here either! Damnit!

I just left the CMP website. I see no mention of AP Greek ammo. The ammo attracts a magnet because it has a mild steel jacket ore core. Where did you see it? I know of no law that prevents anyone from owning rifle AP rounds in Federal Law or Mississippi Law.

AP ammo - will not ship to the following:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The decision to not ship AP ammo to a particular state or territory is based either on a clear prohibition against AP ammo or on broad wording of the appropriate statute coupled with the official attitude of the courts and law enforcement in that state or territory. CMP will not ship AP ammo to any of the following: Hawaii, Illinois, Kentucky, Maine, Mississippi, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Tennessee, District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, California, Louisiana, Michigan, and Rhode Island.
The .30-06 AP ammo that we will have available in 2-3 weeks shows headstamps to be: AYR, SL, TW, LC, HXP. Dates of manufacture vary from the 1940s to the 1950s. Most of the ammo is corrosive, but some may be non-corrosive. The ammo is packaged in 8 round M1 Garand enbloc clips, in bandoleers, in spam cans. Cans may be purchased individually or in what we suspect are the original wooden crates (two spam cans per crate). Cans and crates will be selected luck of the draw as to the headstamp.
4C3006U202-192P. Single spam can (192 rounds). $60.00.
4C3006U202-384. Wooden crate containing 2 spam cans (384 rounds). $120.00.

Funny, the CMP shipped that very same surplus Greek 30.06 ammo to my door in Gulfport MS last year & I have a current order for another 240 rounds that has been paid and pending shipment.

I think there might be some misinformation here.

The ammo has a steel core & attracts a magnet, but is not AP. Here it is:

Nope no misinformation ... CMP WILL ship M-2 to your door all day long!! but will NOT ship the AP!! Go figure???

Think they they got into some "warm" water several years back when they got the first batch of M-2 HXP from Greece. They would ship the HXP in the original wooden crates as received from Greece. However, it was discovered that some of the wooden crates were mislabled and actually contained AP and/or tracer ammo and was shipped as M-2 ball ammo (what was labeled on the crate) .. since many states do not permit the sale of AP or tracer ammo, CMP was actually in violation of several state's laws. To remedy this issue, CMP stopped shipping in the original wooden crates and started opening every crate and inspecting the contents before shipping.

Recently, CMP was told by the state of NJ that they were in violation of state law by shipping Garands directly to the buyer without going through an FFL. (CMP has never been able to ship M1 Carbine to NJ). Now NJ buyers must provide CMP with a copy of the FFL where they desire the garand to be shipped.

Just too many different state laws out there and CMP seems to be taking the "safe" side.

If you buy corrosive ammo, I would not reload the brass. The corrosive salts can stay in the brass and corrode your bore, when reloaded and fired. Also some corrosive priming will cause deterioration of the brass and can cause catastrophic failure of the brass cases when fired.

The Mississippi Law copies the Federal Law and no AP ammo for the .30-06 rifle is illegal to possess. The CMP is simply doing the old CYA routine.

Agreed - There is no law in MS which prohibits the "possession" or sale "within the state" of AP ammo. However, it is my understanding that CMP believes that there is something in our laws regarding the "importation" of AP into the state via mailorder ....

The CMP Sales website lists the following 30.06 ammo for sale: (which is the ammo I am refering to earlier)

4C3006X211-240P - M2 Ball, .30-06, Greek HXP (Pyrkal) manufacture. Packaged 20 rds per box, 12 boxes per spam can - 240 rounds. Boxer primed, non-corrosive. Headstamp varies HXP62-HXP80. THIS AMMO ATTRACTS A MAGNET. Weight is 21 lbs per can. $120.00 per can plus S&H - S&H $15.95 per can - to Alaska & Hawaii - $25.95 per can

http://thecmp.org/ammosales.htm

Is this not the AP ammo this thread is in reference to? I ask because I don't see where it lists any AP ammo for sale actually.

Different ammo, this AP is corrosive and not yet listed for sale. M2 Ball is still OK AFAIK.

Correct - the AP is not yet listed on the website ... but will be available in the near future .. according to CMP ... You can still get the M-2 HXP delivered to your door ...

Sounds good.

If someone wants to make a trip over to Anniston to get some let me know.
For what it's worth, this is what I know 30.06 AP ammo to look like:

Nothing wrong with shooting it if you clean your rifle properly afterwards.

I store a couple cases of corrosive 7.62x39 just in case of SHTF. I don't normally shoot it.

To much non-corrosive ammo around to fool around with corrosive. I'm still sitting on aprox. 1500 rounds of non-corrosive 1962 to 68 LC M-2. That will reload for a long, long time.
