Big Bucks going out of business

Post by jakeg823 on Wed May 05, 2010 2:59 pm

well the roommate and I were running around the 'burg today and stopped by ripoff mountain and big buck sports on the way back. once we got in big buck i noticed they were having a sale, and didnt think much about it, till i made it to the gun counter and heard an employee say they were going out of business. When i asked him about it he said they were all shutting down, not just the Hattiesburg store.

Clothes and gun accessories were marked down to 30% off, I found a compact Kimpro Tac Mag for my compact CDP for about $19 after the discount, a 3 gun holder that stretches across the back of my seat for about $14 after discount.

Sunglasses were 40% off

some fishing poles were 50% off

knives were 20% off i believe

ammo was either 20 or 30% off, but i didnt see any handgun ammo, but still plenty of rifle and shotgun

guns were 10% off

i'm disappointed to see them go, and sticking me with gander mountain, because the prices at the one in hattiesburg were never awful, not sure about the one on 51 though. everytime i've been in there its been so sparse i doubt they'll have any trouble clearing out their inventory.

Wow. And I remember when they were Class III dealers, across the street at what is now some kinda urgent care clinic. Bought my first handgun there, a Beretta 92S.

depends on what you're looking for. they have quite a few j-frames in the $400 range not including the 10% off, LOTS of rifles still, couple SIG556's if i remember correctly as well, several XDs/Ms, maybe a few glocks. , some of the typical blackhawk glockish serpa holsters, still lots of rifle cases and bags, lots of clothing still. and still a fair amount of rifle ammo, looked to be a bit of everything, but i havent shot a rifle in quite some time, so i wasnt checking prices there.

few xd/xdm mags, few surefires left....still a little bit of everything really...plus they have their discount store in the old Deep South Cycles building across the parking lot from them, which i totally forgot to check out while i was there today.

yeah me too, got a pretty decent deal on my XDm from em a few months back. i liked all but the young guy behind the counter, he seemed convinced anything other than a glock was a lower life form, so i came back a few days later to look one more time at it before buying one and spoke with an mid aged guy who didnt look at me like i was a retard for wanting a xdm, and guess who got the commission off of that one?

I dropped by there today and heard the news. Sad to say, I saw it coming. I've known the original owners for going on 40 years, but they got out a few years ago and are doing the retirement thing now. Good for them.

But I stopped by to get some 45-70 for the Shiloh Sharps that's coming to me next week, and the price on ammo really floored me. I was expecting to pay $80 or so for 40 rounds but instead got 60 rounds for less than $80. That helps building my brass stock for when I have to start reloading the cartridge.

I really don't like Gumball Mountain. I really, really don't. And if anybody was looking, most of their prices are higher than Big Buck's.

I grabbed a XDsc 16 rnd mag yesterday for $16. and when I got back to work I noticed it was in a different package for a regular XD mag. the mag I got is normally $29.99 and they had it marked at $23.99. got a good deal on it.

me either. their ammo and handgun prices are insane. long gun prices on the other hand tend to be reasonable, i've come across quite a few steals in there, but unfortunately its always been on something i'm not in the market for. by insane i mean MSRP, which tends to be ridiculous on guns anyway. saw a 100 round pack of winchester white box .45acps for $60 in there the other day! $40 at bass pro as of yesterday, and thats still too steep considering i saw it at the walmarket for $20 a couple months back.

and i went in the ridgeland store today while home for the weekend, and they didnt have much of anything at all(not much different that usual really), still quite a few guns, but i'm just not in the market for anything at the moment, it'd have to be a steal and a half

I went by there today--I can't figure out how they can sell any guns even with their 10% discount... they're still hovering at MSRP.

I needed a couple gun rugs--I found them at Pawn Shop Plus earlier in the day (because I was over there). Hadda go to the post office and cruised Big Buck--they had the same exact gun rugs for $3 more each, and that was with their discount. Dang!

I think we're about 3 weeks into their 'closing sale', and the gun discount is still at 10%. I guess they're sellin' enough like hotcakes so's they don't havta lower their prices.

I liked the staff at BB; they were always friendly and helpful, but I only bought one gun there in all the 7yrs I've lived here because they were just too high. I did buy my safe from them (when it was on sale), because there's no way to beat their price when ya include shipping from somewheres else.

Stopped by the Ridgeland store today. Real odd: no signs, no banners outside. No percent off signs inside. Also almost no merchandise. It's the most discreet going-out-of-business sale I've ever seen. Nothing but the nearly empty store to indicate anything is different. Found a couple of knick-knacks I might have picked up at a good price, but didn't know how much they were, and no one there was even aware of my presence much less interested in helping me. All I can figure is the traffic there is so low they're just shipping it all to Hattiesburg.

Real strange experience.
