It should apply to fed parks, trace included. Now if the feds allow it maby we can get OUR STATE to OK it in public parks. Thanks for the update.

Hey NRA_guy
I've done it a few times....mostly by accident....carrying is just so much a part of what I do..I sometimes don't realize it till I get on NT.
THe way I deal with it is I just avoid the NT at all costs...Hate the 50 mph
I'd hate to have to deal with the Fed's on a "improper gun" issue...it would be a real hassle.
Hopefully it will settle out soon.
Have not heard any mention of this on the news....but I have been to busy to listen

Well - he (you know who!) signed the bill!! However, the carry issue in the National Parks is not effective until February of 2010!!
Just a heads-up for those of you who travel the Trace.

Has anybody ever been ticketed for having a firearm on the Trace?
As long as you drive 50 and stop at the stop signs and don't pass on yellow lines, and don't hang your gun in the window, how would you get in trouble?
Now, squirrel hunting at Rocky Springs might just get you in trouble . . .

I've been stopped at road block on the NT before...Feds and the local police were checking folks on a Sunday evening....
You could be asked....then you have a choice between lying or breaking a federal law. I really don't know what the penalty is but if they catch you in a lie or carrying no doubt it could be a hassle.
Think you can have the weapon in the trunk and ammo in the car....but not together.
New rule doesn't go into effect for 9 months.

National Parks Gun Law Takes Effect in February
A new law permitting concealed loaded firearms at National Parks will not take effect until February and the Interior Department will continue to enforce Reagan-era restrictions until then, a spokeswoman said today.
"Under the current regulation, firearms are generally prohibited, but citizens may transport unloaded and dismantled or cased firearms and carry firearms while participating in approved hunting programs and under certain other circumstances," Interior spokeswoman Kendra Barkoff said in a statement released minutes after President Obama signed the credit card holders' bill of rights, which includes an amendment allowing firearms at the nation's National Parks and wildlife refuges.
The department plans to work on implementing the new law in the meantime, focusing especially on public safety and the safety of National Park employees, Barkoff said. Permission to carry a firearm into a park and the actual restrictions on such possession will vary by state, since the new federal law is governed by each state's firearms laws.
This week both the House and Senate approved Sen. Tom Coburn's amendment to the credit card bill. The Oklahoma Republican and a bipartisan coalition of lawmakers has tried for years to get the measure approved, arguing that differences in state and federal firearms restrictions made it difficult for gun owners to travel between state and federal lands. Interior instituted new regulations in the waning weeks of the Bush administration, only to have them rejected by a federal judge in March. The Obama administration refused to appeal the decision and the president signed today's bill with no comment on the gun provisions. Approval of Coburn's bill is yet another of several recent setbacks for gun control advocates.

Re: Carry on Natchez Trace --
In this months ILA report (p.84 American Hunter) (p.98 American Rifleman) there is and report on the right -to-carry in fed parks. It states that the new law "WILL ONLY PERMIT CONCEALED CARRY IN PARKS WHERE APPLICABLE STATE LAWS ALSO ALLOWS CONCEALED CARRY". Would this include Mississippi where we cannot carry in our STATE PARKS?

you can have a firearm in your car but unloaded and cased with the rounds in trunk. our hunting club used to join the trace and we carried on the trace.... just don't act a fool and it helps to know the rangers... we used to let him take his son squirel hunting on our lease along the trace..

I will have to check the state law to see if carry in MS State Parks is permitted. If it is not, then carry on the Natchez Trace (or in the NP at Vicksburg; or any other NP in MS) will not be legal. The new federal regulation is totally dependent upon your state laws, which is mirrors. Stupid? Yes. Surprising? No.

Re: Carry on Natchez Trace --
i was stopped on the trace once and the ranger asked me if i had a gun in the truck. i told him i did and he took it and went back to his car. he ran my license plate and with that he saw i had a cwp and told me so. he stated the fine for carrying on the trace was $200. he told me the gun had to be in a locked case or compartment separate from any matching ammo. then unloaded my gun and gave it back to me, ammo included and told me this was a warning. i am sure he gave me a break because i was respectful, cooperative and could likely see i wasn't some thug.

UFC you got lucky my friend....My I'd hate to deal with the Feds...
The laws about it being in a locked case seperate from your ammo have been in effect for a long long time ....it should not be news to anyone living in MS.
The new law does not go into effect until Feb 2010 so ya'll be aware of it...
This is one of several reasons why I never drive the NT

Re: Carry on Natchez Trace --
i pretty much knew about the law anyway but i wanted to be accurate in what he told me. problem for me is i live very close to the trace and i need it to get about anywhere. otherwise i would have to go about 17 miles out of my way.
so if you ever get behind a dodge diesel going 50 mph on the trace it may be me. just pass me if you need to. but no need for you whip right back in front of me like you are all pissed off about it.
