Blind or internal magazine on bolt action rifles

Post by msredneck on Sun May 09, 2010 3:15 pm

My new to me Savage 111 bolt action has an internal or blind box magazine...meaning it does not open from the bottom...nor is it detachable

Can someone explain to me the reasoning behind making them that way.?...just cheaper ?...can a gunsmith modify or replace it ?

The only down side as it is the need to have to cycle and chamber each round in order to unload it. I'm wondering...does chambering your ammo each time to unload it have any bearing on accuracy...In the past, once I had chambered a rd it either got shot or it went into the practice ammo pile....my theory was that depending on the bullet style and your OAL the tip could get deformed

I'm a bit more used to those that are not detachable but will yet open to let the remaining rds fall free. Then all you need to do is jack one loaded round out.

You don't have to fully chamber ever rounds to get them out. Just tilt your rifle up and run you bolt just enough to get it out of the mag lips than back your bolt out and get the round out.

Is it a center feed or a staggered feed Savage? If it is the former, I believe http://www.sharpshootersupply.com/ has the parts to convert it to a detachable box pretty reasonably. Look under the "Original Parts" section I think.

Sharp Shooter Supply would also be a place to consider for bolt fluting and some of the other mods you mentioned. I have never used them but have heard/read good things.

Thx

good link there...lots and lots of ways to trick it out

It looks to be center feed...I'm hoping I can get it converted...I prefer hinged

Blind magazines give one less place for dirt to enter the action most especially if you

Blind magazines give one less place for dirt to enter the action most especially if your shooting prone. Weight savings can be one thing. Cheaper to manufacture I'm sure is another. One overlooked thing is stock strength. A stock that is cut out for a mag floor plate or removeable magazine will be weaker as it has a big hole cut out of it. Is that a big issue? Probably debateable nowadays, but something to think about. Why do a lot of varmint and target rifles come as single shots. Food for thought.
