Comparison of 44Mag Ammo velocities: 7-1/2" bbl vs 4" bbl length
I recently purchased a Ruger SuperRedhawk from 3spop with 7-1/2" bbl and scope, and I already had a Redhawk with 4" bbl... When I shot the 7-1/2" I "felt" like it shot harder/faster....so smoffet and I were shooting the other day, and gathered some data that proves up to an extra 200+ fps from the longer bbl... I know most of you already know this, but I'll post it anyhow..along with the stated factory "velocity".... all ammo was new factory, no reloads...sample sizes were small - 4 to 6 rounds with each type...velocities are averages:
----------------------------------- 4" Redhawk --------------7-1/2" SuperRedhawk-------------Factory velocity
Fiocchi 240gr XTP -------------------1251 fps ---------------------1311 fps ---------------------- na
--------------------
Hornady 225gr FTX------------------1381 fps--------------------- 1530 fps---------------------- 1410 fps
--------------------
Hornady 240 gr XTP ----------------1335 fps--------------------- 1482 fps ---------------------- 1350 fps

Remington 180 gr JSP --------------1505 fps ---------------------1711 fps ---------------------- na
----------------------------------- 4" Redhawk --------------7-1/2" SuperRedhawk-------------Factory velocity

Thanks for the test! I've got a 7 1/2 Super Blackhawk and wondered what sort of speed it had.
Edit: I've got a lever 44 mag, maybe I ought to test it.

A 240 grain moving at almost 1500 ft/sec would take down anything we have in MS. Thanks for the info. My Anaconda is 6" but if I ever go to hunt, I'd buy a Ruger single action with about a 4x scope.

Yep that's what I am counting on. I will be hunting this year with my Ruger.

I have a chrono, and really enjoy playing around with it. A few surprising things pop up once in awhile. Thanks for the info.
