Jennings J-22 .22LR pistol-cheap but fun

Yesterday 29Jun'10 for the first time in 18 years I took this little pistol to test. I put near 100 rounds through with about 93% realiabilty. Several mags with no jam but extremely quick to fix when it does. Bet life on-nah! I ran the following: Win Super-X 40g solid copper-plated HV, Rem 36g Golden Bullet Hv Hp and even Aquila 60g SS Sniper (she really liked these). My wife remembered when I shot the couch years ago. Anyone have these still around? I'll put it in the range bag next time out. Has two original 6-round magazines. The problem with a gun this small is keeping the web of hand away from rearward moving slide but if you use weak-hand thumb behind firing hand or tight thumb along thumb as on a .45 you'll do just fine.

I believe the lower velocity of the 60g SS Sniper may have been better because of the finer rifling in these cheap little guns. They were produced quickly in massive quantities but are fun guns. I cleaned everything including extractor and firing pin & hole last night. Had no -FTF's failure to fires-and very few extraction problems with this old gun. I am going to do a little work on this one and see what it likes. I've heard the lower velocity works better but with what I was using on an 8" B/C Dirty Bird target at 15 feet did well. To paraphrase, "it's better than a rolled up newspaper". I want to see if some rounds actually tumble at a little more distance.

I used to have one a long time ago. It was so long ago that I bought it at Walmart. It was fairly accurate for a pocket pistol, the safety was not very secure, and it tended to jam with standard velocity ammo, Remington Yellow Jackets (I think they were called Spitfires or Vipers back then). I was about ready to throw it in the creek until I tried Stingers in it. Ran like a Swiss watch on them.

we have to run stingers in ours... freaked me out wen i went to shoot cheep ammo in it one day and dad wasnt with me

I've got one here at the house that likes the Stingers too.

Had mine at range yesterday. Gun really eats up Winchester Super-X (X22LR) 40g solid. With 100 rounds she jammed 3 times but never when unloading magazine rapid fire. I fixed the one magazine that would fail most earlier and now it is near 97%. Gun does not like Remington Target at all. The newer X22LRSS1 works well also. The red box(100rds) of Super-X found everywhere for some time. I get mine at Walley World. I've got plenty of CCI Stingers to try next time.

Back to the range with it today. 100% on 60 rounds. Forgot to bring the Stingers though and I keep them on hand. Rapid fire was fine. I just may have this one back to speed if a Jennings can be. Good fellow shooting just down from me walked down and couldn't believe the finish on the gun was still 100% circa 1992. First 5 rounds together well at 21. No keyholing have I seen at this distance + a little more. Even got a couple plates though I think I hit twice with no result from the concrete at Magnolia. This gun is still in original box with paper. Just fun to shoot and it's staying in range-bag for now. Hint: I put Birchwood-Casey site-pin on front after last good cleaning. .Bright orange...
