Classifier Match in Byram on 8/1

Magnolia Practical Shooters will be holding a Special Classifier Match on their regular match date of August 1, 2010 (first Sunday of the month) in Byram.

They will be shooting 6 classifiers with a total minimum round count just under 100 rounds. Classifiers generally score and reset quickly which should help get everyone out of the August heat sooner than a regular match with large, prop intensive field courses.

Also, this will provide a great opportunity for new shooters to obtain an initial classification or for anyone interested in obtaining a classification in a new division or trying to move up in a division to get some classifiers in before major matches in Tennessee and Louisiana in the upcoming months. An initial classification requires 4 scores (that are above 0%) and once you get a classification, your best 6 of your most recent 8 are averaged. These 8 must be greater than 5% below and less than 15% above your current class. I really, REALLY hope I can make it to this one. I want to try to bump up my Limited classification, but that may not happen. Worst case, I may try to make it to get classified in another division.

I forget his name but a guy made GM in single stack at the classic , the only person to achieve a GM ranking in all divisions , anyway they had a picture of John hugging him . . .

Did I notice John? Brother, I'm not going to let him live that one down for a LONG time! He did technically get his picture in a national shooting magazine before I ever did though...

The 6 Division GM is Johnny Brister from Rosedale, MS (near Cleveland). I posted about him and his accomplishment here:

He made GM in Singlestack back in April. The article was written by Marlene Coley, who is also shot the Classic with her husband Rocky and is from Leland, if I remember correctly.

As of right now, I don't think I will be able to make the Classifier match. The trial that was supposed to keep me away from the Classic is now supposed to start on August 2. We'll see if it gets continued again or not.

I wish I could make it but my wife scheduled my son's birthday party for that day at 11:00am. No way I'd make it back even if I shot through.

My only hope is to drive an hour and back to Thibodaux to shoot the classifier match there. Wish me luck. LOL.

I just need to decide if I want to borrow an open rig or an SS rig. I figure the SS will be easier to pick up and shoot without having to shoot prior to the match.

If you want to get started, a Classifier match is the place to do it.

Spanky's right, a Classifier match is a great place to get started, and most don't require any movement. They are a little different though, as they "test" slightly different skills than the average USPSA course. This has been a complaint of some over the years.

It just so happens that I have the list of classifiers that will be shot at the match though (as Section Coordinator, I had to approve the match and have it approved by USPSA hq). John is planning to send them out as a reminder this week, but here you go a bit early:

03-11 El Strong and Weak Pres - 24 rounds, turning draw, mandatory reloads to strong and weak hand shooting, respectively, in separate strings.

08-01 4 Bill Drill - 24 rounds, mandatory reloads to strong and weak hand shooting in separate strings and a bit of distance (note 35 yards to back targets)

09-01 Six in Six Challenge- 24 rounds, fixed time, one mandatory reload to freestyle, strong and weak hand shooting in separate strings

09-12 Any Given Sunday - 8 rounds, stand and shoot around barricade

09-04 Pucker Factor - 8 rounds, stand and shoot with hardcover on targets

09-14 Eye of the Tiger - 6 rounds, stand and shoot with turning draw, no-shoot partials and a "head" shot.

94 rounds total, but always bring extra. Note that 4 of the 6 (all but "Any Given Sunday" and "Six in Six Challenge") are scored "Virginia Count". Unlike "Comstock" scoring as used in "Any Given Sunday" where you can shoot as much as you want and only the best designated number of hits will be scored per target (typically 2), in Virginia Count there are penalties for extra shots and for extra hits.

In "Fixed Time" scoring as used in "Six in Six Challenge", there will be a start AND a stop beep from the timer and you can shoot as much as you want during that time, but you will be penalized for shots that are made after the stop beep. Because the beep is .3 second long, a shot is not considered late unless it is more than .3 after the specified time. For example, if the time period is 5 seconds and you break a shot at 5.30 you are ok, because the stop buzzer was from 5 - 5.3. If you break a shot at 5.31 or later, it is penalized.

Fixed time classifiers are great since you can immediately figure out what your percentage is going to be. Simply divide your points by the total points and whammo.

I carry a card in my bag with the high hitfactors for classifiers from when I was tracking my progress through the classes. It hasn't been updated since then, so it is probably 6 years or so out of date. Many numbers probably haven't changed, but of course I don't have any of the newer classifiers on it.

I've never really understood why USPSA doesn't want the high hitfactors published. They are so easy to calculate and the online calculators are apparently fine.

I agree. I don't know what the deal is, either. It's not really hard to divide your HF by your percentage to figure out what you need for 100.

Sid...one thing I can tell you...you better practice a lot of weak hand shooting...

Those always blew me away...man I'd love to shoot a classifier....but not in this heat...it would be a waste of time...for me...I'd melt
