So correct me if i'm wrong
I'm still trying to find the exact and current gun laws. I just moved to MS about a month and a half ago from NC where things are a bit different. Keep in mind that I do NOT have a CCW, I have to wait another 10 months. Turns out I shouldnt have let my MI or NC one expire.
I have a few questions that i've searched for but found little info.
1. Is MS an open carry state? If so, do I need a CCW to open carry?
2. I know your car is an extension of your home so, can the handgun be loaded in your vehicle? and if so where can it be at inside?
3. Does anyone know about coming on base with one? When I was still active duty we were able to come on Camp LEjeun with a hand gun we just had to have it unloaded, slide back and on the dash is plain view.
4. Is there anyway to get past the 12 month waiting period? I know if you're active duty you dont, but im not anymore.
Like I said before I've tried searching for info but a lot of what I found is old so I just want to make sure I have the best info before I do anything. Thanks everyone.
Oh yea, does MS have the "can't fire within 500 feet of a dwelling" law? NC does and I had to go to court because of it for shooting a damn cat that scratched my daughter.

1. Grey area, you can carry open but only with a concealed license. Some crap about the holster making it "concealed".
2. Loaded, one in the pipe, in your lap or concealed on you or concealed in the car. Perfectly legal. If it is concealed on you and the police ask you to step out of the car, you will be breaking the law once you leave the car. I wonder how that would play out...
3. I know nothing about military rules.
4. What waiting period? If you are now a resident, there is no waiting period. It takes me about ten minutes to buy a firearm. There isn't even a background check if you have your firearms permit. (Do NEW residents to MS have a waiting period, guys????? I've never heard of such.)
Welcome to MSGO, btw. Smarter people should be along shortly to correct my mistakes

Thanks man, you answered my questions good enough. For number 4 the waiting period I meant for a CCW, I should have been more clear. I already bought a XD-.45 here in Gulfport yesterday, I love the fact you can walk in, find a gun, and walk out in 30 mins. I love this state.

Cool. Glad you like it here and congrats on the XD.
The wait is now 45 days for a ccw and mine took 45 days exactly about a year ago. I bet they take the full 45 days on purpose.
No way to get around the 12 mos. as far as I know

(a) Is a resident of the state and has been a resident for twelve (12) months or longer immediately preceding the filing of the application. However, this residency requirement may be waived, provided the applicant possesses a valid permit from another state, is active military personnel stationed in Mississippi or is a retired law enforcement officer establishing residency in the state.

i think its only for active duty, but don't quote me on that.
as for carrying on base....i'm not sure what that rule is like now. my dad was in the Air Nat Guard here in Jackson, at the 172nd, and I know after 9/11 they wouldnt even let you carry anything but a issued knife....that could have changed now.
He told me about when they were still searching EVERYONE's vehicles EVERYDAY how one guy decided to show is @$$ one morning, and showed up w/ his pistol in his truck, they sent him home to put it away, he came back w/ ammo still in his truck, they sent him home to put it away, he came back w/ some huge hunting knife and they told him to get rid of it too and he jumped out of the truck and threw it as far as he could...he said the MP's werent too fond of that.
I still go on base from time to time, to get paperwork filled out for benfits, and id cards and such, and have never been searched, they just check my id and wave me on, might ask me where i'm heading. if i'm on my dad's bike they dont even check my id cuz most of the mp's knew him, and know the bike(although i havent ridden on base lately, since they started checking EVERYONEs id.)
If you have a contact at the base in question, I would get him/her to get you a CS # or something so you can find out their policies...but especially since that retard in Texas...I'm not sure they're going to go for it....makes sense i know.

Have you been here?
LINK
Most DOD installations have a sign posted at the gate that says guns are prohibited and cars are subject to being searched.
I work at such a place.
To my knowledge they have never done a search.
On any given day probably 30% of the vehicles contain a firearm (not openly displayed). During deer season the percent goes up.
Of course, they may clamp down any day and they would keep you off the base if you tried and got caught.
I'm not advocating any breaking rules, and of course I would never do it myself; I'm just sayin' it happens.

So here's my new business idea ... open a small shop just outside of the main gate. Offer to store guns for a small fee. Payoff the security guards so they start searching randomly throughout the day. Whaddaya think? ;-)

That's a great question -- unfortunately I don't have an answer for ya.
Re: So correct me if i'm wrong
I may be wrong but if you are stopped by police or highway patrol, it is in your best interest to present both drivers license and carry permit. That keeps everything proper if the vehicle is searched or you are asked to step out of the car. You certainly should state you are armed if stepping out and ask how they want you to proceed. And don't make stupid moves like reaching under your coat or for billfold unless stating you are doing so. This is no different than getting out of your car and going in Wal Mart. You are still legal with the permit to exit the vehicle in my belief.

Re: So correct me if i'm wrong
Ive been pulled over for an expired tag several years ago, i told the highway patrol officer that i just got my latest tag sticker and it was in my center console. He proceeded to tell me to get it out and go put it on for him. I told him my 22 pistol was in the console beside the tag and asked him what do you want me to do.
He simply told me to remove the pistol and put it where he could see it.
So i put it on the seat, pointing away from him and me, got my tag sticker out and put it on.
He told me thanks for letting him know about the pistol and the whole situation went smooth and we were both on our way.
So as long as your honest with the officer things should go smoothly..

I get pulled over a lot since in my line of work I have to drive customers cars all day long. I'm constantly getting pulled over for expired tags, lights not working, or something like that. (good thing I never get a ticket since I am on the job!) They only want your license and insurance, they will know you have a permit when they run your license. They never ask me for my permit, but I can always hear the dispatcher say "valid firearms permit" over their radio.

You don't need a permit to have a gun in the car, but I see your point.

You are not required to declare and I will not do so unless directly asked by the officer.(which they never do for a simple traffic stop in my experience) I agree that, obviously, you would have to say something if it was on your person, you had no permit, and were asked out of the car. Once you step out in that situation, you are breaking the law. With a permit, you are fine. I would also declare if I was about to be frisked. Don't wan't any suprises there! Same thing with nonnie's situation.
Out of sight out of mind when possible. JMHO
Don't go flashing a piece on the lanes, Walter. You might get popped!
