22RF Conversion for "Evil Black Rifles"...
22RF Conversion Video <==== My AR-15 "Shortie" with the 22RF conversion
At the gunshow this past weekend (7/10-11/10) I bought a Target Master 22RF conversion for AR-15s. Click on the link above to see the first test firing.............. Sorry for the poor video quality, but I selected a format size for quick upload.
At the gunshow Saturday I talk to the guy selling these. I drilled him pretty good about his units. He had good answers...... Not being very knowledgable of these type conversions myself, I went home and posted here asking for your opinions. Got NO replies... you BUMS....
.
Saturday night I did some Internet research on the conversion units and the S&W, Colt and Ruger 22-AR rifles. This unit that uses Blackdog mags was well liked. As a sidebar... The S&W rifle seemed to be the best. The Ruger is a 10/22 wrapped in POS plastic. After handling a S&W and Ruger at the gunshow Sunday, the S&W was "nice" but very light (plastic parts). The Ruger just looked POS from one end to the other........... The only thing that looked "AR" about the Ruger was the M4 type stock. Both were priced about the same at around $550. WAY TOO MUCH...... IMHO.
I went with the conversion unit mainly because I will be shooting my REAL AR-15s. Not light-weight 22RF copies. True, I might be giving up some accuracy because of the smooth-bore section and the barrel twist rate, but function & feel is more important to me. Plus I just doubled the number of AR-15s I have..... so to speak.....
Today I went to the range to test my new TOY..... I only had 2 types of ammo (Federal Champion and Remington Golden Bullet). I started with the Fed. and had a few FTE jams. The Rem. ran almost perfect. The test today was only 150+ rounds. I was not shooting for accuracy, just function today. However, the bullets were hitting very close to point-of-aim at both 50 & 100 yards (from off-hand shooting at items on the berms). I am very happy with my $175 (unit + one 25rd mag) purchase.

Actually got to shoot the new toy today at the range!! Put a mag down range without incident ... very good accuracy shooting at the 50yrd berms off-handed. After seeing it in operation, I would buy one!
Nice addition, SGF!!

Sub- The Ruger SR-22s I have handled had aluminum chassis not plastic, Rugers website even says they are aluminum, Nordic who makes the chassis kit for the SR22 for Ruger and has sold their own chassis kit for a few years have always made their kit out of aluminum. Maybe they have changed in the last few months but when the Ruger came out last year it the chassis was all aluminum.

I stand corrected..... thanks. The Ruger SR-22 body is probably aluminum. I was just so dissappointed in the Ruger's overall look. I expected better from Ruger...................

SGF,
If you have an older SP-1 upper you may have a 1 in 12" twist rate and the accuracy isn't half bad with these older uppers.
I would strongly suggest you run several rounds of 5.56 after shooting .22LR in your upper. The smaller copper washed lead bullet leaves lead in the grooves and has a tendency to plug the gas port on the barrel.

OH YEAH..... Running 223s through the AR after shooting 22RF is a GIVEN..... True, you might get a build up of "22RF Crap" in the bolt carrier from 22RF crap coming through the gas tube, but that is easily cleaned out.

Re: 22RF Conversion for "Evil Black Rifles"...
I had my Ciener .22 conversion out yesterday. It's running very well in full auto with CCI Blazer same as my buddy who brought out his Norrell Ruger 10/22. He's been working out the bugs with his Black Dog fifty round drums and it's almost 100% in full auto.
Most of yesterday's shooting was .22 LR, both suppressed and unsuppressed and suppressed 9mm. I can't begin to tell you how nice it was not to have to wear ear muffs in this heat.
Black Dog Machine has the same conversion kit as SGF for $175.00 and includes two of their mags.

That seems to be a good deal with 2 Blackdog mags included .. they run about $25 a piece!
