SMGA USPSA Match July 18 Pearlington,Ms (this weekend)

Post by GunOneDown on Wed Jul 14, 2010 3:29 pm

Inviting all to come on down to our match this weekend. Tom runs the match and he can also sell you some supplies if needed. Last month we had about 50 shooters, so y'all come on and have some fun. PM me if you need directions or just post and we'll get you there.
Thanks,
G1D

I'm thinking about trying to make it as well. Enjoyed my last trip down and that was in March.

They had 17 last month in Production, Cliff - 4 C's, 8 D's, and 5 U's. In 2010, they haven't had less than 12 in Production (in May when the match was held on a different date due to a conflict with the MS Classin) and have had as many as 22 (in April).

Seems we been getting some new shooters every month. Production is by far the biggest class. Come on down and bring a friend is what I say.

You can certainly come watch, but it is always more fun to shoot! Make sure everyone has eye and ear protection and come on out.

They will start shooting around 9 am, and here are some directions:
Take Exit 2 off I-10 (close to Louisiana Line) get off and go South past Welcome Center approximately 1/2 mile. Road will be on LEFT side with Silver Gate. There will be a sign (TARGET w/ARROW) showing where.

As far as what you need to shoot, in addition to eye and ear protection, you'll need a gun, 4 or 5 magazines, a holster, magazine pouches, and about 150 rounds of ammo or more. You will only shoot somewhere around 100 or so, but the extras make sure you have full mags when you finish and are there in case you need to reshoot a stage for some reason.

Here are a couple of good threads with some info about shooting matches and the different divisions. Take a look at them and then let us know if you have any questions. We'd be glad to help.

Ive never shot in a civilian match or course before so i'd be a little intimidated. Ive shot matches in the military before, Division matches in the USMC and I even made the goveners 20 when I was in the National Guard. Besides the gun, mags, pouches, saftey equip, and ammo what else would I need? Is there an entry fee? I would love to shoot but I just dont know the procedure to shoot. Thanks for the help.

No need to be intimidated (although I do understand that inclination). Everyone has to have (or have had) their first match at one time or another. With your background, I am sure you will be fine. One thing to keep in mind though, since it is a different game that you have not shot before, is to come ready to learn and take it easy your first match or maybe two. Safety and fun come first and second, and you'll do fine and improve quickly I have no doubt. Some folks have problems if they try a bit too hard before they have the hang of it, if that makes sense.

There is an entry fee of $10 or $15, but some clubs let you shoot your first match with them for free. I can't remember off hand if Tom does that or what he charges, to be honest. I'm sure G1D or bigsig can help with that. It all depends on the club's finances and what it costs them to put on the match, for range use, etc.

Other than the stuff you mentioned, you could use some comfortable shoes or boots with good traction in grass/dirt, a hat, some sunscreen, and maybe some water or sports drink if you want as it will be quite hot of course. I'd definitely recommend not going out and buying much, if anything, besides ammo for the match, as you may pick up some things you quickly learn aren't "ideal" or what you personally want for competition.

As far as procedure, bring your unloaded gun in a pistol rug or case. The range is "cold", so guns can only be handled at designated "safe areas" or when under the direction of a range officer, so keep it in the rug or case until there. Ammunition can be handled anywhere except in the designated safe areas. Other than that, there will be plenty of people to help teach you the rules and guide you through. You'll get the hang of it in no time.

The courses vary from match to match, which is one of the best things about the sport to me. Hope to see you at the match.

It varies. Most "local" matches I've been to (4-5 stages) usually last around 4 hours or so.

Yeah, I'd hazard a guess of between 12-1 for when it will be over.

An XD right out of the box is perfect for Production division, where very few modifications are allowed. You'll only be able to load 10 rounds in your magazines to further level the playing field in Production.

Lt. Dan you will love it. Just go slow and save. You will see people shoot faster then you thought was possible. Don't try to walk before you can crawl so to speak. Shoot at your level and have fun because that's what it all about.
Good luck.

Right. The holster that comes with the XD will work or any other kydex or leather holster that covers the trigger guard should be fine for your first match. Don't go buy anything special because Production division does have limitations on what you can use and you may want to look around and talk to some people before making a decision. You'll need some way to carry all but one of the magazines on your belt. The mag pouch from Springfield will work, but you will need several. If you have to carry 1 or 2 in a back pocket, it will be ok for your first match so don't let that keep you from coming out.

Match starts at 0900hrs. get there early to be able to walk around and look at stages and ask questions. Fee for the match is $13.
I don't think first match free. I have acouple more new shooters coming with me and BigSig. I shoot under the rule of go slow and shoot "A's" and speed will come along with time. It's fun and u can challenge yourself. You will have a good time and probably meet some new friends if you come Lt.Dan. We do have some great shooters as well as beginners, so please don't feel intimadated. Just be safe and follow range rules, if you don't know, ASK.
