Kinda Backwards build, Need Opinions
Got this new Leupold FX-3 30x40mm today and looking to do a build. I am really leaning towards a 308 5r remington 700 vtr, with a bell and carlson stock. my question is will this scope be good for that gun. i have a 1/2 mile of power line on my back 102 acres and want to bust deer from as far away as possible. this is a fixed scope with adjustable parallax. The scope new list for 720. and i made a great trade for it. Anyway my question is whats the best setup for this scope in 308 to deer hunt, varmint hunt, and range shoot, 20" sps or go for 26" barrel, is the 5r necessary, here is a pic of the scope and specs. this will also be my build thread.
also what are the best rings for this setup, and i will not be shooting reloads, this will all be factory ammo, and what grain would be best. really looking for any info here being i have never shot on this scale, most of mine have been 223, 22-250, 204, etc etc
also here is my last build on my AR, its hitting 1/2 MOA at 100

Let me get this straight. It's a 30x40 fixed? That's some real power. What's the fov at a 100yds?

Do you really think you will be happy with this on a deer rifle?

Re: Kinda Backwards build, Need Opinions
also this is why i am asking opinions, is the scope to much or not enough for what i am wanting to do. I understand a 30mm or 35 is better for hunting and light but i love the clarity this one has anywhere from 50 to 400 yards. if its not the scope i need suggest the correct one please. the scope i have on the ar is a zeiss z-600 3x9x40 and i love it

Steveo,
If you want to kill deer at 600 w/ factory ammo, .308 Winchester isn’t going to do it! You need one of these shooting 180 gr bullets. http://www.gunsamerica.com/908041126/Guns/Rifles/Remington-Rifles-Modern/Model-700/Tactical/Remington_700_Sendero_300_Win_Mag.htm
The 30x40mm is not going to draw light very well. The best light gathering power for the 40mm objective is 6.6X. That 30x40mm is an excellent scope for what it was designed for BENCHREST at know distances. I would recommend selling it on 6mmbr (which will not take long) and get you a 6.5-20x50mm Leupy with the same target turrets as the 30x40mm.

thats the kind of info i am looking for! the only thing is i am not goin to sell this scope. may just keep it and put it on something else. will a load like a hornady TAP 168 gr. be any good for those distances. i know i could always slap this scope on an 22-250 and reach out with it.

It has been a while since I have bought a box of ammo! The 168 gr, A-Max would be the best bet. A-Max is hell on deer!

I would think that it would shot as well or better than the TAP. The A in A-Max stands for accuracy. The NBRSA 600 yard Light Gun record was shot w/ the 105 A-Max 5 shots .5823".. So A-Maxs are ment to shoot!

That is an awfull lot of magnification for a deer rifle. You are going to see every heartbeat when looking through that thing. And I mean your heartbeats. That would be a good benchrest scope bit I think it is too much for a huning rifle. If you are dead set on building a rifle build an "F" Class gun.

Don't forget to put it on 6mmbr.com like 300 atlas said. Good luck with the sale.
