Shipping Ammo Legally, How to?
I have a deal pending on some ammo.
Who can I use to ship it? US Post? Fed Ex? UPS? DHL? Other?
What steps, paperwork, need to be filled out?
Thanks

Re: Shipping Ammo Legally, How to?
U.S. Postal Service (USPS) - Shipping ammo is prohibited.
United Parcel Service (UPS) - Shipping ammo permitted with packaging/weight/labeling qualifications.
Federal Express (FedEx) - Shipping ammo generally prohibited unless HazMat certified
United Parcel Service (UPS):
1. Pack ammo within a sturdy cardboard box, gross weight limit of 66 pounds.
2. Print ORM-D label, cut out and tape to a least one side of box.
3. Take package to a UPS Customer Center only - NOT at Drop-Off Box, The UPS Store, Mail Boxes etc., Sonic. Might be a good idea to have the UPS Hazardous Material Support Center number with you -- 800-554-9964. Varied success with UPS pick-up at your location.
Per UPS:
UPS accepts domestic ground shipments of ammunition that have been classified by the shipper as "Cartridges, small arms", "ORM-D" (Other Regulated Material). The package must be properly marked according to the requirements of Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations (49 CFR). Contact the Hazardous Material Support Center at 800-554-9964 for details on regulatory information.
Federal Express (FedEx):
Per FedEx, 10/26/2006:
HazMat Training is required to qualify to ship all Hazardous Materials. Ammunition is a Hazardous Material. No Drop-Off, package must be picked up by FedEx. See How to Qualify.
I have shipped ammo with UPS. You can print "ORM-D" lable or write it on the box. You can only ship it from a UPS hub, it can't be one of the UPS stores.

righttoown is correct about that 800 number -- have it with you, and if the shipping clerk doesn't want to take it, have them call that number and the folks at the support center will explain what they need to do. Voice of experience here...

Do you have to pay Haz-Mat fee?

If the person is within 100 miles of you, it would pay to just do a F2F deal.
Shipping ammo is EXPENSIVE due to the fees.
Also some "UPS stores" won't accept the shipments at all.

No UPS Store will ship it, you have to go to a UPS Customer Center, that's at the hubs where they load all the Big Brown Trucks.

Re: Shipping Ammo Legally, How to?
There's no special fee to ship ammo. Hazmat doesn't apply to loaded ammo. Just mark ORM-D on the box, draw a rectangle around the "ORM-D" and ship it. It weighs a lot, and that's why it's expensive to ship.
UPS has a Hazardous Materials support phone number (800) 554-9964. Here are my notes from talking with them. I have followed these procedures and not had a problem at the Laurel UPS shipping center...
Must ship the item at a customer counter at a REAL UPS Distribution Center. Must go out UPS ground, and must stay w/in lower 48. Must not be over 66 pounds. Must use big black marker to make a rectangle around the letters “ORM-D”. Above rectangle write “Cartridges, small arms”.
HTH.
