House Passes Bill to Keep Creditors From Taking Guns

That $3000 limit is the loophole. Any more than just a few arms and your over that!

"If you file for bankruptcy, you run the risk of losing your money and your car to creditors.

But under a measure that just overwhelmingly passed the House of Representatives, one thing they would not be able to take is your gun.

The House this afternoon passed a bill that would change the law to allow someone going through bankruptcy proceedings to retain their rifles, shotguns, and pistols so long as they are worth less than $3,000 combined. (CBS Radio Capitol Hill correspondent Bob Fuss reports that, under the law, if you keep just one firearm, there is no such limit on its value.)

Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-VT, introduced a similar measure in the Senate yesterday. The bill passed the House 307 to 113.

The House measure was introduced by freshman Democratic Rep. John Boccieri of Ohio, who argues that "We must protect the rights guaranteed to us by our founding fathers, no matter what financial circumstances a citizen might face," according to The Plain Dealer.

The National Rifle Association, possibly the most powerful lobbying group in Washington, endorsed the measure, saying in part, "We think it is reasonable for folks who are in financial distress to have an effective means of defending themselves."

Many states already have carve-outs for firearms in bankruptcy proceedings.

New York Democratic Rep. Carolyn McCarthy argued on the House floor that the measure is a mistake, the Plain Dealer reports, arguing that having guns in households that are going through bankruptcy could increase the risks of suicide and violence. "

Thats why you "sell" them to much trusted buddy for $1 each. Just like a divorce, you dont want to lost everything so you sell it to a very good friend and buy it back in a few months.

Yet another reason most all of my firearms purchases the last few years have been private FTF sales.

The Gob'ment or anyone else has no business knowing what firearms I may or may not have lost in that boating accident...

Funny thing. I was rowing across the Mississippi River last weekend and a tugboat went by. The wake sunk the boat that I had all my guns in.

I wouldn't have survived myself but I was wearing a life jacket.

I would have reported it to the police and filed an insurance claim, but I figured there was no need. JK

Years ago, I used to hear my folks talk about who was bad off during the Depression and who came out well off.

The folks who owed money were the ones who lost their property and were really hurting.

Those who owed nothing were better off.

Those who could grow their own food AND owed nothing were the best off.

Yeah, what he said. Still have a house note but nothing else and the house is worth more than we owe. I haven't paid a car note in over 20 years. Credit cards are for emergencies or vacations when I don't want to carry a lot of cash. They get paid off when we get home.

Besides, who would loan money to a dumb ole Bible and gun clinging redneck??? If I am too stupid to see that Obama's best qualification was his skin color I am too stupid to be trusted with money.

too many folks finance stupid stuff because they cant wait and save up and go pay CASH for it. Impusle buying get lots of people in a bad way. I swore off credit cards long ago. I keep one for emergencies (you know like a mint 1950's model colt 1911, or a sweet little LC Smith 20ga.) but i make certain i pay it off in full when its due. I think the biggest thing i see on a day to day basis is people trying to live way beyond their means. At least once a month i will have a mid 20year old making $350 to $400 a week come in and want me to finance a brand new loaded out f250 or a new camero. Drives me nuts. whats even more crazy is a few will get pissed at me for not lending them the money.... oh yeah they want me to finance 100% plus the money for the tag and insurance too. With some of them i suspect i may be the first person in their life to tell them NO.

and dont even get me started on the "Entrepreneurs" wanting to borrow some "capital start-up money" so theys can start a recording studio for up and coming rap stars. i was laughing at him as i showed him the door.
