Break-in of a new barrel with Deaton's Bore Cleaner

Post by bullet on Fri 30 Jul 2010 - 21:47

Just bought some more after using my last supply up breaking in a new barrel. Deaton's bore cleaner is absolutely the best I have ever tried. I won't shoot without it, I love it. Couple of Gunsmiths I know are now using it for the breakin of the barrels on custom guns they make for their customers. This was my first barrel to use the Deaton's bore cleaner on for a break in and I am sold. Though I liked it for my cleaning after range sessions and I do, but like it even more when breaking in a new barrel. Before I had shot and cleaned after ever shot for 10 rounds and fired a five shot group, my break in was finished in 15 rounds and my group closed up to a raged hole for the last five shots.

Her is the target from the break-in. I fired two rounds to sight in at 25yds then cleaned the barrel. Fired a third one at 100 to see were I was on target and adjusted my scope and then I cleaned the barrel.

I then fired 7 more rounds cleaning after each round. My patches would hardly get any blue at all just a very light trace. So I then fired a 5 shoot group putting a total of 12 rounds on the same place on the target using 150gr Sierra, 59.3grs of IMR4320 and Rem 9 1/2M primers. I did not weigh and sort these bullets, nor did any special brass work and did not measure precisely each charge of powder like I usually do, because it was a break in load. The five shot group closed up for one raged hole.

I did not take a lot of time to position myself and shoot with as much care as I usually do. I just shot, because I was more interested in cleaning my barrel and getting through the break-in process. I think there is going to be a lot of potential for this rifle. The barrel is really slick now and not leaving copper deposits. It took only 15 rounds to break this rifle in. Due in part to the barrel (Savage button barrel) and the Deatons getting the bore perfectly clean each time I used it, which allowed me to smooth out he asperities on the lands and grooves much quicker each time I sent a round down range.

I can't wait to get some. Trying a group buy but no ones bit yet. Maybe you can help persuade them.

It is what it is - Good stuff, the best I have ever used, plain and simple.

I use JB Bore Paste

JB Bore Paste is available from Brownell's. Shoot 10 rounds, clean with JB. Repeat until 100 rounds are fired. This has been very successful for me with new HP Target Rifle barrels.
