recoil question

I have a handi-rifle I am considdering getting a new barrel for in 500s&w but first I would like to find out if anyone can tell me what the recoil is. I have a savage 111 270win that I am comfortable shooting but do not want to get much higher in recoil than that. Is there anyone who can give me an idea on the difference?

I dont know about the difference but i heard one guy say that his would break open from the recoil. Id think a .444 would be a better choice.

There's an old post on this site with a link to Recoil energy..... think 'Neck might have posted it.... I believe the 500 will have over 2x to 4x the recoil of a 270 which is a pussycat........ found it:

You might get by with the little bullets from 250-350 grs. but the 500 gr. ones won't be pleasant in that little light rifle. Can't speak for the .500 S&W but I loaded up some 45-70 cartridges for a buddy of mine that has the Handi-Rifle...he insisted on big ones and wanted to try my 535 gr. Postell bullets...so I fixed him up. First shot thumped him right between the horns...second shot knocked him off the bucket he was sitting on.

leave the 500 be....if 270 Win is a lot of recoil for ya

buddys dad has a 500 handi and he wont shoot it anymore due to the recoil. te sold it and got a 444. the 444 handi is a sweet little shooting rifle. it has been my primary hunting rifle for the past 3 years and will knock a whitetail in the dirt with a Hornady 265 gr lever revolouion but it soes kick a little more than my 270 but not that much just get a limbsaver recoil pad on it and you will be good to go.

I have a 444 Marlin...while it doesn't bother me...its hits pretty hard....Now XD is a pretty healthy fella so I imagine its no biggie to him either...


Course you could load em down with hand loads....

The small light weight handi rifles punish you because of their light weight...There aint no free lunch...Handi (light weight...shorter gun) means more punishment for the shooter...generally speaking

Look at that Chuckhawks recoil table and select a cartridge you think would be suitable and see if H&R will make a barrel....They make a bunch of diff. calibers about $85 for a barrel last I checked

As a matter of fact...I have a handi rifle combo....has a 444 Marlin and 270 Win barrel...I've never used the 270 Win barrel

The .444 has less recoil than the 45-70.

Spmwheels you wanting this for deer hunting right?

Thanks for all the info folks, and that is correct xd it will be for P/W season this comming fall if I am able to get it in time otherwise I will just wait until next year.

best advice I can give is try and meet up with someone on here sometime and try a 444 Marlin out and see if it suits ya...You can come shoot mine anytime

Again, thank you all for your wonderful suggestions. I think I finally figured out how to solve my little problem of not knowing what other caliber to switch to. And maybe some of you folks who do your own reloading might be able to help me out on this. Can anyone tell me where to get 200gr .357 rounds? I know that Cor-Bon makes some, but I don't really want to pay that much for them to be shipped to me. I also know that they are made for reloading. Does anyone here possibly have the equipment needed to load a few for me? I will pay for all supplies needed and also for your time loading them if anyone is willing to do so.

Friend of mine bought the .500 handi, and I shot it one time, I've shot a 50 cal bolt gun that doesn't hold a candle to the recoil of the .500.

I couldn't handle all the loose teeth from the 500. As far as someone reloading for you I personally will not do that as most people would probably think the same. Nothing personal just to much of a liability.

My stepson had one just in 308 and after he couldn't keep the scope from bouncing off his head everytime he shot it he got rid of his.

I finally decided to just go ahead and order some 200grain double taps from midway. I will let everyone know how they work out in a few weeks.

I had a .500 SW handi rifle. It had some teeth rattling, bone breaking recoil. It was the only gun I've ever shot that was no fun at all. Made shooting a 30-06 seem like a .22 lr. I'd say it had 2-3 time the felt recoil of a 45-70 handi. I guess it was from the such fast burning pistol powder and the high pressure of the round. It also broke open from the recoil and had a hard time extracting the cases. It seriously grouped about 8" at 75 yards. I tried three different ammo types and three different scopes. I got shed of that thing. The guy that got it acted like he could handle it and make it shoot straight.

BTW, I've heard that the accuracy problem is because they used the wrong twist rate. Don't know how true that is tho.
