Williams also invented the floating chamber of .22LR. It makes superb reliability possible in full auto guns. Sam Snyder at Practical Solutions has designed a floating chamber .22LR conversion for the MAC family of subguns. He currently has my M11/9 receiver for fitting his kit and I hope to have it back in a couple of weeks. Everything old is new again... http://www.practicalpage.com/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=66
Local friend and fellow Vegas Shooter's Admin Perro owns a 1919 .22LR conversion kit based on William's floating chamber design. The link below is to his article in progress so please excuse the typos, punctuation errors, etc. It's GREAT stuff and includes video of his 1919 shooting belted .22LR ammo in full auto... something many people have never seen.

William’s first prison-built rifle used a floating chamber design that later became the basis for several designs that allow firearms to fire a sub-caliber round. For example, Colt’s .22-.45 conversion kit, which allows a Government Model 1911 to fire .22 Long Rifle ammunition, was based on a floating chamber. The US Military adopted several conversion designs for firing .22 ammunition in several different firearms, including the .30-caliber Browning Machine Gun. Because .22 ammunition is about as cheap as it gets, using it during training seemed like a great economy measure during the Depression. Williams received a patent for the floating chamber in 1936.
