alarmed me over the last two years is the number of economist that say our debt load is UNSUSTAINABLE. Since I don't see Washington cutting spending on entitlements, I see hyperinflation as a distinct possibility.

It would have to be heavily moderated to keep all of the gov. Conspiracy and tin foil hat stuff out of it. This will be more for actual survival info. Like how do you cut back no utility costs, how do you grow your garden, how do you prepare for natural disasters etc.

Just the growing fear itself could be the trigger that in fact sets things off...this could become, in a manner of speaking, a self fulfilling prophecy sort of speak...

There are plenty of natural and man made situations that range from likely to very likely, the spectrum also consists of minor inconvenience to total collapse of organized advanced civilization. The SINGLE biggest difference between those who survive and those who perish are those who PREPARE!

What will set it off will be when people lose confidence the US govt can repay it's bonds and quits buying them. I figure that will happen in the next few years as the huge glut of baby boomers start drawing social security and medicare, not to mention Obamacare.

Just my 2ยข, ymmv.

A good one I saw on another forum was about canning game meat. I guess we all learned during Katrina a freezer full of meat is worthless without electricity.

Phillip's post brought up a question that would be something along the lines of what I would like to get out of the forum. How long would you run a generator to keep the freezer's contenents frozen? Two hours a day, an hour every 12 or what. I've got an empty freezer I would run to keep a gallon of water frozen and would run a test if no one knows.

Back then they said to use wadded up paper in ice chests to add additional insulation. I know I've read a full refrigerator or freezer is easier to keep cool than an empty one because of the air space. If you do your test it would be interesting to know if insulating material inside would help. You would need a thermometer that could be read from the outside so you wouldn't be opening and closing the lid ruining the test.

Yes this should be a survival forum...NOT too heavy in 'causes' and 'conspiracies' (meaning little or NONE at all) as to why we might be in a survival mode. People who want to prep know why they need to already, 'preppers' are just looking for more information on how to do it...not the WHY of it, they have already come to that conclusion...in most cases.

Big Hammer, the boss man, in my opinion, has it exactly right!

Sid during Katrina I had no power for 10 days...I keep a big freezer outside...with about 1/2 cow and 5 or 6 deer year round...Ran my 11 KVA generator 2 hrs in the am and 2 hrs at night....my frig and freezer were fine....lost nada

What??? Wow, I've been labeled a kook because I questioned whether I was being paranoid or having a healthy dose of wariness about the intentions and direction of our government. That will teach me to keep my mouth shut.

Whoa, wait a minute. I didn't mean to imply anything of the sort. I think these were both good topics which I enjoyed. I just think these two topics would fit nicely into the category of self survival, if such a category were created. Nothing derogative in what I was saying, just giving examples of some current topics that I think would fit into this new category.

Saw dust is a good insulator also. Has anyone watched that new show called the colony. Its about how a group of people would survive in a disaster ina a basically deserted town/city. They gotta come up with ways to generate power protect themselves from attack, Provide safe food and drinking water. You would be amazd at what you can learn from that show.

Sorry CAJNFRND, I misread your statement 180 degrees. I read it as you did not think that these should be allowed on the new site because they were way out.

I take a "Get home bag" with me when we go to New Orleans. No way I want to get caught there without the basics if a castastrophe occurs.

It contains water, food, medical supplies, rain gear, flashlights, fire starters, paracord, radio, knife, etc...

I also have room for my weapons, mags & ammo which stay in the car locked in a hidden compartment.

How many of you still have people around that can vegetables. That is becoming a lost art. Need to learn how before they are all gone and we have to relearn the process.

Heck, the "world has gone crazy" thread was mine and I was not the least bit offended. Even my wife will tell you I'm a kook! lol

I'm all about being prepared. Although I believe that when our world truly ends I will be taken out of it to be with my Lord, assuming I'm still walking the earth, I absolutely expect that there will be a whole lot of hard times between now and then. And I want to be able to take care of myself and my family and, if possible, still function in my chosen role as a law enforcement officer and help other people as well. If I am going to do that, I need to stay prepared.
