Picked this up today for the wife...

Post by TankerHC on Tue Aug 31, 2010 3:46 pm

to keep in the car. Its a Phoenix HP22A in 22LR. I believe it will do the job if she is threatened. I know a lot of people disagree that 22LR is not good for SD but at close range I think it will get the job done. Any suggestions on what type of 22 round she should use?

Be sure of the pistol's reliability before depending on it for self defense. I have personally had bad luck with Pheonix pistols. Use Hi-velocity ammo in it and lubricate the slide and frame with Tri-Flow oil.

FWIW my little Taurus 22 won't cycle the hollow points -- only the round nose. You'll just have to see what works in your (er, I mean her) pistol.

If you have a lot of FTF, then take a really close look at the mags and make sure they tip the rounds up enough to slide up the feed ramp. Seems to me the huge majority of self-loader feed issues are really just mag issues...

It looks like a blowback design. Sometimes the slide spring is really tight on these, and if so, it might require one of the stouter loads to function properly.

Again, those are just suggestions, but you may have to try a few different types ammo until you find the right one.

I gave it to her tonight and I dont think she likes it. First thing she asked was "Will this even stop somebody?". Then she told me she wanted a 9MM. Her best friend carries a 38 so she wanted something bigger than a 22. She also wants to get her CCW. Oh well, an excuse to buy another gun.

Just read on the Phoenix Arms web site that this pistol is designed for standard velocity target ammo, so you probably won't need the high velocity stuff.

I should have done some research on prices before I purchased like I have on my other guns. I bought this for 25 dollars more than it costs brand new at The Gun Source. Lesson learned.

Reminds me of the old joke:

Man 1, "I got this gun for my wife."

Man 2, "Good trade."

PS: All the women I know carry a .38 or larger . . . or they carry nothing at all.

That could be why they both carry 38s LOL I like the way your wife thinks. I'm all for all women getting their CC and toting something for protection other than pepper spray

My little wifey's gun is a Walther P22 with Stingers. She just will not shoot the bigger calibers.

Went to the range today to do some shooting. Took out the Phoenix, loaded it, attempted to fire...nothing. Did everything humanly possible to get this thing to fire. Wouldnt fire a shot. Back to Big Daddys.

What type of ammo for your 22? Anything in 9mm will do! Very Happy

Honestly I'm glad it didn't work for you. I just wouldnt trust my life to a 22.

My wife's EDC is a Ruger LCR .38 +P w/laser. IMO the Phoenix, Jennings, Brycos, Cobras don't even make good paper weights let alone a SD weapon. Just my 2 cents worth........

I am glad it didnt work out as well. I jumped the gun on that one. Should have let her pick out her own gun, hold it and see how it felt and all that. As soon as I gave it to her she didnt like it. So, im taking it back Tuesday and Saturday we will go buy her the gun she wants. She wants a 9mm. Need something with a smaller frame and wont jump out of her hand when firing.
