Made the jump to the dark side.

Post by mstrsippy on Thu Sep 02, 2010 12:53 pm

Until today I had avoided the AR platform. But today I bought a S&W M&P15 flat top. I have heard that AR's in general can be picky about ammo. Some don't like the Wolf because of the lacquered case, some don't like handloads. I was wondering about the Silver Bear ammo, even though it is a steel case, it is nickel plated instead of the lacquer coating. Anyone have comments on what to feed the new toy?

TULA .223 from cheaperthandirt.. $200 per 1000.

ive gone thru quite a few boxs thru my stevens and ARs.. works for me. pretty accurate too, 300yd shot on a small coyote with my stevens.

What code do you have to enter to get 1000 rounds for $200? I did see 500 for $150.

some don't like handloads. Maybe the reloads are CRAP.....

I was wondering about the Silver Bear ammo, even though it is a steel case, it is nickel plated instead of the lacquer coating. Silver Bear ammo is ZINC plated, not nickel.

This will most likely stir some up, but IMHO most average AR shooters (not comp guys) do not honestly shoot and evaluate each particular brand. They go by heresay and their buddies opinion. If most shooters have an issue they automaticly blame the ammo instead of the platform ie. dirt/carbon build up, aligned gas rings, weak extractor springs, loose bolt key, stretched buffer springs etc. Some ammo is better than others at covering up an underlying issue. Dont get me wrong, some ammo performs better than others but 95%+ of today's factory loads should run in any given AR. YMMV

Glad you got one, I love my S&W AR15 optic model. When I bought it I called S&W and ask them about lacquered coated ammo if it was all right to shoot in the S&W and would it void any warranty. They said, "shoot it, it won't void the warranty nor hurt the S&W AR15." So I bought 2000 rounds of Brown bear and have put 500 through it and not problems and it shoots the lacquered coated 52gr HP Brown Bear ammo pretty good for Russian ammo.
